The new Apple TV horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay made its debut on April 29, 2026. The show follows Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, who wants to turn his small New England island into a tourist spot. The only problem? The locals believe their town is cursed.

The first two episodes drop viewers right into the strange happenings on the island. What starts as a normal day quickly turns into something much darker. Mayor Loftis, who does not believe in ghosts or curses, gets hit with events he cannot explain. By the end of the second episode, his entire worldview starts to crack.
Episode 1: A Fisherman Goes Missing and Comes Back Wrong
The series opens with Shep Clark, a local fisherman, out on his boat. He is talking to the harbormaster about his wife leaving him. Suddenly, his boat’s electrical system starts acting up. Then a thick fog rolls in and swallows his boat completely.
At the same time, the town loses power. A strong earthquake shakes the island. Mayor Loftis wakes up and checks on his teenage son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick) , who is not home. The teen sneaked out to smoke with his friends.
The next morning, Loftis learns Shep is missing. But he has bigger worries. A writer from the New York Times named Arthur is coming to the island. Loftis wants a positive article to bring tourists to Widow’s Bay.
Wyck (Stephen Root) , a local who knows the island’s dark history, warns the mayor that the fog “took” Shep. He says the island is “waking up” and demands a curfew. Loftis refuses to listen. He even lies to the town, saying Shep has been found, just to keep things calm.
Loftis takes Arthur around town. He tries to hide the strange history, including stories of witch trials and cannibalism from the 1700s. But things get worse. The fog returns. Later that night, Shep walks into a local bar and collapses. He is taken to the hospital.
At the hospital, Loftis visits Shep’s room. The fisherman wakes up. His eyes are completely white. He attacks Loftis before dying. This moment shakes the mayor. The white eyes match exactly what Wyck had described.
The episode ends with a creepy reveal. Underneath the local restaurant, The Salty Whale, there is an electric chair hidden away. Something dark is buried beneath this town.
Widow’s Bay Episode 2: The Mayor Spends a Night That Changes Everything
The second episode starts with a church bell ringing loudly in the middle of the night. Loftis hears it. His assistants hear it. But when the rector checks the bell, it is chained shut. There is no way anyone could have rung it.
Loftis still refuses to believe in anything supernatural. He continues pushing his tourism plans. But the town is pushing back. Wyck shows up at the local inn and tries to board up its doors. He claims the place is dangerously haunted.
The inn is a big problem for Loftis. If tourists cannot stay there, his whole plan fails. After arguing with locals at a diner, Loftis accepts a dare. He will spend one night alone in the inn’s most haunted room, the Captain’s Suite. If he survives without any supernatural trouble, the town must drop their ghost stories.
That night, Loftis arrives at the inn. The owner, Kurt, gives him a video camera to record everything. Kurt refuses to even enter the Captain’s Suite himself. He says he does not stay in the inn at night.
At first, nothing happens. Loftis watches boring TV and tries to play strange board games. Then he meets William, another guest at the inn. The two men start drinking and talking. Loftis shares stories about his difficult father and his summers on the island.
William seems friendly at first. But then things turn dark. Loftis goes into a crawl space in the basement. William follows him, now wearing a clown mask. A serial killer known as Willie the Clown Killer is part of the inn’s dark legends.
Loftis wakes up the next morning in his bed. He does not know what was real. He checks the CCTV footage. The cameras show him drinking alone all night. No William. No clown. Just Loftis by himself.
But then Kurt enters the Captain’s Suite. Only a few seconds pass outside, but inside the room is destroyed. Black mold has spread across the walls. Kurt comes out completely shaken.
After seeing all of this, Loftis makes a choice. He decides to keep the inn open. He still wants tourists to come. Even after a terrifying night he cannot explain, he refuses to admit the town might be cursed.
