The latest episode of You and I Are Polar Opposites shifts focus from the main couple to give fans a deeper look at the relationship between Taira Shuuji and Azuma Shino. While Suzuki Miyu and Tani Yuusuke continue their adorable moments, the real highlight of this episode is the emotional growth between Taira and Azuma. Bowling Alley Brings Old Memories and New Tensions
The group decides to go bowling, and this simple outing turns into a moment of reflection for both Taira and Azuma. While everyone shows off their bowling skills, Suzuki proves that bowling is not one of her strong points. Her poses and attempts to build up energy only send the ball straight into the gutter, creating some funny visual moments.
The real drama happens when Taira spots some old classmates from middle school. He immediately becomes worried that they will come over and start talking. Taira, being his usual worried self, spends most of the evening hoping he won’t be noticed. His overthinking nature takes over, and he allows their mere presence to ruin his night. His friends quickly point out that the old classmates know he is there but are simply trying their best to pretend they do not see him.
Azuma also runs into some old friends from middle school. She used to date one of them and was almost involved with another, both of whom ended up dating other girls in that same group. The situation is so awkward that everyone avoids a direct confrontation. Taira was completely unaware of everything happening around him back then.
“Taira (obviously) thinks too much, about everything. But Azuma thinks too little.”
Taira Stands Up for Azuma’s Feelings
The most meaningful part of the episode happens on the way home from the bowling alley. Taira and Azuma are left alone, and Taira finally speaks up. He complains about Azuma’s behavior, asking her why she never gets angry. He points out how she always tries to be kind and forgiving toward others, even when they do not deserve it.
Azuma is taken completely by surprise because she did not expect him to get so agitated on her behalf. As they talk, Azuma realizes she has had similar thoughts herself but never managed to put them into words. The problem with Azuma is that she under-reacts to things. She refuses to take offense and just goes with the flow. This makes her a doormat who usually ends up being second, third, or fourth priority.
Taira has the opposite problem. He over-reacts to everything and everyone around him. Girls giggling off to the side? They must be making fun of him! What Taira needs is a little dose of Azuma’s go-with-the-flow mentality. And that is exactly what he gets. Azuma calms some of his fears, not all of them, but enough to get him through the night.

Azuma’s ex-boyfriend also sends her a message, troubling her. Taira defends Azuma’s feelings in her place. Considering it is Azuma’s ex-boyfriend, he is probably just looking for a quick hook-up. He knows she will not throw a fit, so he figures why not try? It is frustrating to watch because Azuma knows she deserves an apology from her ex, but it does not take her more than a few seconds to get over it.
Suzuki and Tani’s Photo Date Brings Awkward Cuteness
The episode also features a photo date between Suzuki and Tani. Suzuki is excited about taking pictures with her boyfriend, but neither of them is interested in taking photos. Suzuki is extremely self-conscious about the possibility of looking uncute in front of Tani and generally prefers to use photo filters. Tani looks like a deer in the headlights, so awkward about taking photos that he cannot be bothered to pose for any of them.
It is funny to watch Suzuki try to strike the right poses for a photo booth while poor Tani just stands there. There is not much comedy to be found here, and there is not much to this whole date beyond watching these two be cute together. It is charming enough, but it is not as memorable as some of their other interactions.
There is a meaningful moment when Suzuki starts calling Tani by his first name, Yuusuke. There has been no acknowledgement of this change, she just starts doing it. The pair muse over what to call each other in the final scene. While this is a big deal in Japan, the series treats it casually.
Tani Visits Suzuki’s House for an Awkward Encounter
The later part of the episode shows Suzuki inviting Tani over to her house. Her mom goes overboard the second he walks in the door. It is clear she has no idea how to act in front of him, and it is entertaining watching her try to play it cool by offering food or asking where he lives, only to stumble over every conversation starter.
Suzuki does not fare much better. When she finally gets Tani away from her mom long enough to have him come hang out in her room, she realizes she now has to deal with having a boy in her room. This leads to a delightfully awkward few minutes where these two are desperate to find anything to talk about. Tani breaks the ice when he reminds Suzuki that he does not really know how to take the lead with conversation and opts for a hug instead. It is not their sweetest or funniest moment as a couple, but it is tender enough to work. The episode ends with a decent punchline when Tani runs into Suzuki’s dad, who manages to be only slightly less awkward in conversation when he learns about the boy his daughter brought home.

The episode makes it clear that the title “You and I Are Polar Opposites” applies to all three couples. Each pair represents a different kind of polar opposite situation. Tani and Suzuki are opposites in personality. Yamada and Nishi are opposites in social style. Taira and Azuma are opposites in how they process emotions and react to situations.
Taira and Azuma grew up near each other and attended the same junior high school. This shared history becomes important when the group goes bowling. Azuma immediately understands why Taira is stressing and moves to put his mind at ease. The episode shows their relationship changing little by little. While nothing is stated outright between them, Azuma’s response when Taira apologizes the next day is very telling. She previously mentioned that she always forgives the person she likes.

The series has used exactly sixteen chapters of the manga across eight episodes. The manga has 65 chapters in total, so the anime is going to cover less than half of them this season. The series continues to introduce more couples whose relationships are still developing, keeping the story fresh and engaging.
