Netflix’s new true crime series Worst Neighbor Ever shows how ordinary neighborhood disagreements can spiral into something much darker. The show, which started streaming on July 1, 2026, comes from the same team behind Worst Roommate Ever and Worst Ex Ever. The four-part documentary series uses bodycam footage, victim interviews, and animated reenactments to tell four separate stories about neighbor conflicts that ended in violence.

Episode 1, titled “She Finally Snapped,” tells the story of Shawna and David Scott and their neighbor Frances Zaayer. What started as a friendship from their teenage years turned into years of harassment that ended with Zaayer shooting both of them in May 2018.

The Friendship That Became a Nightmare

Shawna Scott and her husband David moved to Mount Sterling, Kentucky, to be closer to Shawna’s family. It was there that Shawna reconnected with Frances Zaayer, an old family friend who had just bought a house across the street from them. At first, the reunion seemed positive. Zaayer even moved in with the Scotts temporarily while her new home was being renovated.

But the living arrangement quickly became tense. Shawna said Zaayer started showing strange and controlling behavior. She demanded that Shawna not clean too early in the day and shouted at the Scotts’ grandson. She also showed the family videos of herself taking part in protests against Islam. The Scotts asked Zaayer to leave.

Escalating Harassment After Zaayer Moved Out

Things got worse after Zaayer moved into her house across the street. She started a constant campaign of harassment against the Scott family. The conflicts included property line disputes and physical fights.

Former Deputy Duana Kidd said: “I was called to Washington Avenue almost daily, it was over and over all the time.” The constant calls to police became so common that dispatchers recognized the address.

Shawna described in the documentary: “Frances decided that she was going to try to cause problems.”

Some of the disturbing incidents included:

  • Shawna calling 911 after seeing Zaayer topless in her garden
  • Zaayer calling police to claim she was being videotaped every time she walked outside
  • Zaayer mowing her lawn naked and walking around with few clothes on
  • Zaayer reporting Shawna for working while on benefits
  • Zaayer building a driveway over the property line

David Scott had concerns about Zaayer from the beginning. Shawna shared in the documentary: “David did not like her at all, he said she’s trouble from the beginning. He was a very good judge of people.” David was a deputy jailer, and Zaayer believed he was protecting his family from facing consequences for crimes she imagined they committed.

Zaayer took Shawna to court on charges of assault. Shawna was arrested in 2017 but later released because there was little evidence of a fight. Zaayer kept wearing a neck brace even though no injuries were found on her body.

The Deadly Attack in May 2018

The situation reached its breaking point in May 2018. After the assault case against Shawna was dropped, Zaayer became enraged. CCTV footage showed Zaayer walking across the street to the Scotts’ house with a gun.

She fired at both Shawna and David. David Scott, 47, died at the scene. Shawna was shot in the face. The bullet entered through her nose and exited the side of her head. She survived but suffered devastating injuries.

Shawna said she needed 16 surgeries after the attack. She lost sight in her left eye and hearing in her left ear. Her face was left with scars.

A neighbor called 911 and told the dispatcher: “It’s this crazy motherf**ker they’ve been dealing with for years.” When the call handler asked if it was Frances Zaayer, the neighbor confirmed yes. Zaayer was arrested at the scene.

Shawna didn’t learn about her husband’s death until she woke up from a coma and asked for him.

Where Frances Zaayer Is Now

Frances Zaayer pleaded guilty to murder, second-degree assault, and first-degree wanton endangerment. She was sentenced in 2022 to 35 years in prison. She will be eligible for parole in 2038.

Shawna shared her fears in the documentary: “It’s my biggest fear for Frances to be paroled. My fear for my kids, my family. Honestly, I hope she never gets out.”

The episode explained that “Frances never gave an explanation for anything. She didn’t believe she’d done anything wrong.”

The show also includes a speech from Shawna’s daughter Haley at Zaayer’s sentencing. Haley said: “You deserve so much more than the sentence you are receiving today. But it’s at least a good start for taking the life of a proud father, grandfather, adoring husband, and a pillar of this community.”

Haley added: “I know families of the victims often end their statements with ‘I forgive you,’ or ‘I need to forgive you to move on.’ But I want to make myself very clear. I do not forgive you, I don’t want to forgive you, and I’m never going to forgive you.”

Worst Neighbor Ever is available to stream now on Netflix. All four episodes dropped on July 1, 2026. The series continues the “Worst Ever” franchise from producer Jason Blum and director Cynthia Childs.
