9-1-1 Season 10 Episode 2, titled “Fire in the Hole,” aired on ABC on October 22, 2026, and turned downtown Los Angeles into a river of molten rock. The volcano that erupted in the premiere kept exploding, killing the city’s emergency services director and leaving Maddie Buckley in charge of decisions that could cost lives. Athena Grant remained stuck underground with two men, one of them the disgraced rookie cop Matthew Sparks. Buck pulled a pregnant woman out of a car surrounded by lava. The hour ended with Athena still buried and no one above ground aware she was missing.
Athena Finds Familiar Company Underground
The premiere left Athena (played by Angela Bassett) trapped after she followed a jewelry store lead into a tunnel. Episode 2 opened with the ground still collapsing around her. She heard a voice behind rubble, crawled through, and found Harvey, a man with a head injury, and Matthew Sparks (played by Zach Tinker).
Sparks is the former probationary officer who shot a civilian instead of using his taser during a traffic stop. He tried to apologize to Athena. She refused the apology because he never contacted the woman he shot, while Athena had.
Harvey claimed he knew the way out. The group soon realized they were walking in circles. Harvey’s memory was failing, and he did not recognize Athena. He talked about going home to his wife, who had died three months earlier. Athena checked him for a concussion but could not work out what was wrong.
The trio finally reached an exit in the final minutes. Another volcanic blast blocked the way. Athena ended the episode still underground, with no one above knowing she was down there.
Maddie Takes Control of a City on Fire
Director Worrell, the man in charge of Los Angeles emergency services, was killed early in the hour by falling debris. His death left no clear chain of command. Maddie Buckley (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt) ended up running the response because no one else wanted the job.
Maddie made a mutual aid call that reportedly cost $40 million. She then faced the hardest choice of the night: which parts of the city to defend and which to let burn. The dispatch center was flooded with panicked callers, some asking if the volcano was a hoax.
Oliver Stark, who plays Buck, spoke about the physical demands of the episode’s rescue scenes.
“Every second of it. It was so much fun for the most part. Yeah, look, I’ve always loved the physical aspect of this show.” — Oliver Stark, on performing his own stunts in the lava rescue
Buck Swings a Pregnant Woman to Safety
Lava pooled around abandoned cars across the city. Chimney (played by Kenneth Choi) came up with a plan that worked like a deadly game of “Floor is Lava.” Civilians climbed onto car roofs while rescuers moved through the crowd one by one.
One man refused to wait. He jumped from car to car, fell into the lava, and died. The death scared everyone who saw it into following instructions.
Buck (Stark) found a pregnant woman named Paige in her car. He led her across the roofs until lava surrounded them. Chimney and the team arrived just in time, and Buck swung Paige to safety before another explosion.
Hen and Harry Stay With a Dying Woman
Hen Wilson (played by Aisha Hinds) and Harry Grant (played by Elijah M. Cooper) responded to an apartment building where a woman had been struck by a lava bomb. The woman was pinned to the floor and knew her injuries were fatal.
She refused treatment so the firefighters could help people who could still be saved. Hen left to help others. Harry stayed and held her hand until she died.
Eddie Uses a Service Dog to Find a Seizure Victim
Eddie Diaz (played by Ryan Guzman) found a service dog wandering through the chaos. He walked the dog through the traffic jam, using its sense of smell to find its owner. The dog led Eddie to Ryland, a man having a seizure inside his car. Eddie placed the dog inside the car to comfort Ryland while he treated him.
May Faces a Hospital Overrun
May Grant (played by Corinne Massiah) worked a hospital floor flooded with burn victims. A groom covered in burns passed out in front of her. May had a panic attack and cried on the bathroom floor. She later botched an IV insertion and was benched by the head nurse. May returned to the floor later in the hour and did better.
