“12th Fail”: Vidhu Vinod Chopra Celebrates 100 Days Despite Initial Criticism

Loading

Director Vidhu Vinod Chopra‘s latest film, “12th Fail,” which garnered mixed reviews, has completed 100 days since its release. Despite initial skepticism, the film managed to cross the 50-crore mark at the box office. Chopra recently celebrated this milestone with the film’s cast, including lead actors Medha Shankar and Vikrant Massey.

Chopra revealed at an event marking the 100th day that he faced resistance from several quarters, including his own wife and film critic Anupama Chopra, who advised him against releasing the film in theaters. People expressed concerns that a film centered around a 12th-grade failure, based on the life of IAS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, would not attract audiences to theaters.

12th Fail initial response

During the celebration, Chopra disclosed, “Many advised me not to release a film about a 12th-grade failure in theaters. Even my wife suggested the same, and film critic Anupama Chopra echoed the sentiment, saying people won’t go to theaters to watch our film.” He added, “They said no one would go to cinemas to see your and Vikrant’s film. They also claimed that the film won’t do well, as I am no longer associated with the film industry. Trade agencies predicted an opening of only 2 lakh rupees, with a lifetime business of just 30 lakh rupees. Everyone scared me.”

Despite the initial apprehensions, “12th Fail” found success on OTT platform Disney Plus Hotstar after its theatrical release. The film, which revolves around the story of a 12th-grade failure turning into an IAS officer, received applause for the performances of Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar. Chopra acknowledged the criticism but emphasized that the film’s success demonstrates the importance of honesty in filmmaking.

Addressing the audience, Chopra explained, “Our first show was 100 days ago, and for me, everything depends on the intention to make a film. People asked, ‘Why are you making this film?’ I made an honest film, and the result is in front of everyone.”

Despite initial skepticism and discouragement, “12th Fail” proved its critics wrong, achieving significant success on the digital platform. The film’s unexpected journey from skepticism to celebration highlights the unpredictability of audience preferences and the resilience of filmmakers like Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who stay true to their artistic vision. As “12th Fail” continues to resonate with audiences, its 100-day milestone stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the triumph of determination in the world of cinema.
