The show first premiered in 2019 and quickly gained a loyal following. It received a 93% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season and holds an IMDb rating of 7.4/10. Critics praised the show for its honest and funny take on body image, self-worth, and navigating life as a young woman who refuses to change her body to fit society’s expectations.

The series is based on Lindy West’s 2016 non-fiction book Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman. West co-created the show with Bryant and Alexandra Rushfield. Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks served as executive producers. Warner Bros. Television produced the series.

Luka Jones plays Ryan, Annie’s on-and-off boyfriend. Jones is a comedian known for roles in People of Earth and Up All Night. Ryan works at a hardware store and is lazy and selfish, often driving Annie crazy with his immature behavior.

John Cameron Mitchell plays Gabe Parrish, Annie’s boss and the editor-in-chief of The Thorn. Mitchell is an actor, singer, and playwright best known for writing and directing Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Gabe is a former punk singer who clashes with Annie at first but later recognizes her value to the company.

What Is ‘Shrill’ About?

The series is different from many other comedies because Annie does not want to change her body. She wants to change her life. She learns to stand up for herself, demand respect, and go after what she wants. The show handles serious topics like fat shaming, body positivity, and self-acceptance with both humor and heart.

Why Is ‘Shrill’ on Netflix Now?

Netflix has been licensing popular shows from other networks and streaming services. Warner Bros. Television, which produced Shrill, has been selling rights to Netflix for many of its shows. The streaming deal reportedly lasts for one year. Shrill will be available on Netflix through at least June 2027.
