The USS Enterprise just made the most significant time travel mistake – or perhaps the most important decision – in Star Trek franchise history. The Season 4 premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, titled “Valles Marineris,” sends Captain Christopher Pike and his crew 65 million years back in time, where they accidentally become responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs and the very rise of humanity itself. The episode, which launched on Paramount+ on July 23, 2026, has completely rewritten the established history of Earth, Mars, and the Star Trek universe.
The Enterprise Goes Back to the Age of Dinosaurs
The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off with a classic science fiction setup. While observing an interstellar storm, the Enterprise receives a Mayday from a distress buoy and gets caught up in the energy wave. The ship is thrown millions of years into the past, landing in the Sol system during the Cretaceous period. The crew initially believes they are in an uncharted corner of the galaxy, only to realize they are actually near Earth.
An away team consisting of Number One Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), and Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) beams down to the planet’s surface and encounters living dinosaurs. The sight of a Tyrannosaurus rex shocks the Starfleet officers, who immediately worry about accidentally changing the future. The episode pays homage to Ray Bradbury’s classic 1952 short story A Sound of Thunder, in which a time traveler steps on a butterfly and alters human history.
Mars Was Once Home to a Civilisation
While the away team deals with prehistoric creatures on Earth, Captain Pike and the rest of the crew aboard the Enterprise discover something even more surprising. Mars, the red planet known in the 23rd century as a barren world, was once home to an advanced civilisation of spacefaring humanoids. These Martians are locked in a devastating war with an arachnid species called the Dol’drm. The Dol’drm have been attacking Mars and have already destroyed a large portion of the planet, leaving behind the massive scar known today as Valles Marineris – the episode’s title.
The Martian commander, Cassel (played by Saffron Burrows), is desperate to save her people. She steals one of the Enterprise’s primary antimatter fuel cells to build a weapon of mass destruction against the Dol’drm homeworld. Captain Pike and his crew pursue Cassel, preparing to stop her from committing genocide against an entire species.
Captain Pike’s Impossible Decision
The climax of the episode presents Captain Pike with what actor Anson Mount calls “maybe the toughest” decision of the series. Pike has a choice: stop Cassel from destroying the Dol’drm planet and save an alien species, or let the attack proceed. He realises that in the future, there is no fifth planet between Mars and Jupiter. The Dol’drm homeworld does not exist in the 23rd century.
Pike makes the gut-wrenching call to let Cassel proceed with the attack. The destruction of the Dol’drm planet creates the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. The blast wave destroys Cassel’s ship but also provides the energy the Enterprise needs to return to its own time. However, the consequences do not end there.
As the Enterprise jumps forward 65 million years, an asteroid fragment from the destroyed planet crashes into Earth. This becomes the Chicxulub impactor – the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs and allowed mammals, and eventually humans, to evolve. The gravitational effects of the planetary destruction also shift Mars’ orbit, turning it into the cold, dead world known in the present day.
The Enterprise Is Responsible for Humanity
The shocking twist means that the USS Enterprise and its crew are directly responsible for the existence of humanity. By allowing the Martian attack to happen, Captain Pike set in motion a chain of events that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs and the rise of mammals. The crew of the Enterprise inadvertently created the conditions for their own species to evolve.
The episode presents a predestination paradox – the Enterprise had to travel back in time to make human history happen the way it did. If Pike had stopped Cassel, humans would never have evolved. The crew finds themselves grappling with the mind-bending implications of this revelation.
“It’s definitely a big swing,” said Celia Rose Gooding, who plays Nyota Uhura. Anson Mount added that the cast often has to stop filming to work through the complex time travel logic. Rebecca Romijn, who plays Number One, noted that the characters’ mental processing of the events is shown in real time on screen.
What This Means for the Star Trek Universe
The change to human history is not a one-time event. Romijn confirmed that “there’s a callback to it later in the season,” meaning the ramifications of Pike’s decision will continue to affect the story. The premiere episode fundamentally recontextualises every event in Star Trek history.
The episode also introduces the idea that the Martians may have survived. Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) analyses Cassel’s DNA and finds similarities to many different species across the galaxy. This suggests that the Martians escaped their dying planet and spread their genetic material throughout the cosmos.
In addition to the time travel twist, the premiere features other significant developments. Una Chin-Riley receives a promotion to commander, a moment that has been a long time coming for the character. Captain Pike is offered a promotion to commodore but turns it down, instead recommending Una for advancement.
