When Justice League hit theaters in November 2017, it brought together DC’s biggest heroes on the big screen for the first time. The movie featured Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. Among the cast was J.K. Simmons, the Oscar-winning actor known for his intense role in Whiplash, stepping into the shoes of Commissioner James Gordon. Many viewers expected Simmons to bring the same power to Gotham City’s top cop that he brought to other roles. But what audiences got was something much smaller than expected.
Simmons Warned Everyone His Justice League Role Would Be Small
Back in March 2017, months before the movie came out, J.K. Simmons told the press exactly what to expect. He explained to ScreenCrush that his part in the first film was “very, very small.” He called it “a little introduction of the character.” Simmons mentioned that he hoped to take “two or three or four cracks at” playing Gordon in future DC movies, whether in a Batman solo film or a Justice League sequel.
The actor knew the role was just a setup for bigger things down the road. At that time, Warner Bros. had plans for multiple DC films. A Batman movie with Ben Affleck directing and starring was in the works. A Justice League sequel was also being discussed. Simmons was ready to grow into the role over several movies. But those plans changed quickly after Justice League did not perform as well as the studio had hoped.
What Gordon Actually Did in the 2017 Theatrical Cut
In the final version of Justice League that came to theaters on November 17, 2017, Commissioner Gordon appears in one main scene. The scene takes place on a Gotham City police rooftop next to the Bat-Signal. Gordon meets Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Cyborg to discuss a plan. He tells them that kidnapped scientists might still be alive. Batman responds, “Not enough,” when Gordon asks how many of them there are. Cyborg then arrives with news about his father being taken. Gordon also shares information about Parademon nests.
After that rooftop meeting, Gordon disappears from the movie. He does not join the final battle. He does not have any emotional moments or character growth. He is there to move the plot forward and then leave. For an actor of J.K. Simmons’ skill, this felt like a waste to many people who watched the film.
Fan Reactions Then and Now
When Justice League first came out, fans expressed disappointment online. Many felt that Simmons was the perfect choice for Gordon. His look, voice, and presence matched the comic book character well. But the movie gave him almost nothing to do.
One review from 2017 called Simmons part of the film’s “wasted potential.” The reviewer wrote that Gordon “had no reason to be in this film other than establishing his presence in the DC Universe.” Another comment said, “Much was made of JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. In the end he had a line of dialogue, which is a pity as he is a great actor.”
Fans wanted to see Gordon interacting more with Batman. They wanted to see the trusted partnership that comics and animation have shown for decades. Instead, they got a quick hello and goodbye.
What Changed in Zack Snyder’s Justice League
In 2021, Zack Snyder’s Justice League arrived on HBO Max. This four-hour version of the movie restored many scenes that were cut from the 2017 release. J.K. Simmons appeared again as Commissioner Gordon in this version. His role remained mostly the same as the theatrical cut. The rooftop scene was extended slightly but did not add major new moments for Gordon.
The bigger difference was the tone and context. Snyder’s version gave more time to every character, including supporting players like Gordon. While his screen time did not increase by much, the scene had more weight because the overall movie felt more complete.
However, even in the Snyder Cut, Gordon remained a small part. The four-hour film focused heavily on Cyborg, The Flash, and Superman’s return. Gordon was still just there to introduce the team and send them on their way.
What Happened to Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon After Justice League
J.K. Simmons was set to return as Commissioner Gordon in the Batgirl movie. That film finished filming in 2022 and was in post-production. Warner Bros. made the surprising choice to cancel the movie completely, even though it was nearly done. The studio said the decision was for financial reasons and a tax write-off.
That cancellation meant Simmons lost his chance to finally play a bigger version of Gordon. The Batgirl movie would have given him more screen time and a proper role. Instead, his time as the character ended with two movies where he had very little to do.

Where to Watch Both Versions of Justice League
The 2017 theatrical cut of Justice League is available on multiple streaming platforms. Viewers can find it on HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and other digital stores. Zack Snyder‘s Justice League is streaming on HBO Max as well. The Snyder Cut runs four hours and two minutes. It is rated R for violence and language, unlike the PG-13 theatrical version.
For audiences who want to see J.K. Simmons as Gordon, both movies offer the same brief appearance. The Snyder Cut provides more context around that appearance, but the character’s role does not expand significantly. Simmons brought his talent to the part, but the scripts never gave him a chance to truly shine.
