MGM+’s new limited series American Hostage has arrived with a two-episode premiere, and it wastes no time dropping viewers into one of the strangest true crime stories in American history. Jon Hamm leads the series as Fred Heckman, a respected Indianapolis radio newsman whose quiet career gets upended when a desperate man named Tony Kiritsis takes a mortgage broker hostage and demands to be interviewed live on Fred’s popular radio program.
The eight-episode psychological thriller premiered on Sunday, September 20, 2026, with two episodes on MGM+. It is based on the acclaimed 2022 scripted podcast of the same name, in which Hamm also voiced the role of Fred Heckman.
Tony Kiritsis Takes a Hostage in a Brutal Way
Episode 1, titled My Town Indy, opens with Fred Heckman signing off from his radio show. He has spent more than twenty years in Indianapolis and is weighing an offer to move to CBS Radio in New York City. Before he can make a decision, a breaking story hits the newsroom.
Tony Kiritsis, a 44-year-old former used car salesman, walks into the offices of Meridian Mortgage Company and confronts Dick Hall, the company president. Tony believes the Hall family cheated him on a mortgage for 17 acres of land he hoped to turn into a shopping center. He produces a pistol and then rigs a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun to Dick’s neck with wire, connecting the trigger to his own neck. This device, often called a dead man’s line or deadman’s switch, would fire if Tony were shot or if Dick tried to escape.
Police cannot rush the scene without killing the hostage. Tony then forces Dick out of the building and marches him through downtown Indianapolis as officers and reporters follow. The two eventually reach Tony’s apartment in Crestwood Village, where the standoff begins.

According to Comic Basics, the production placed its sets next to each other so that actors could perform at the same time instead of separately. The series is set in February 1977 and follows the real 63-hour standoff that gripped Indianapolis. Tony Kiritsis was facing foreclosure when he took Dick Hall hostage. He had hoped to build a shopping center anchored by a steakhouse on a 17-acre plot of land, but the deal collapsed, and he blamed the Hall family and their mortgage company for financially wronging him.
Throughout the crisis, Tony made live calls to Fred Heckman, pleading to listeners for the justice he believed he was due. The standoff ran for nearly 63 hours before Tony stepped out of his apartment with Dick, who was still bound to the shotgun device. Tony delivered a furious, profanity-laced speech and freed Dick without harming him.
A court later ruled Tony not guilty by reason of insanity, and he remained in a mental health facility for eleven years.
What Reviewers Are Saying About the Premiere
Critical response to American Hostage has been mixed but largely positive. On Metacritic, the series holds a 57% positive score based on early reviews. Collider gave it an 80, praising it for adapting the podcast and recounting a true story in a thrilling, engaging way. Screen Rant rated it 70, noting that both Hamm and Ribisi deliver strong performances, though some supporting characters feel less fully developed.
The Hollywood Reporter was harsher, calling it a show with a great story and great cast but squandered execution. RogerEbert.com gave it a 63, saying it works on its own terms while never quite justifying its existence in the wake of Gus Van Sant’s 2025 film Dead Man’s Wire or the original podcast.
On the audience side, American Hostage currently holds a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and is the third most popular series on MGM+.

Fans have responded strongly to the pairing of Jon Hamm and Giovanni Ribisi. One viewer shared that the show immediately throws audiences into a wild juxtaposition between the two actors that was immediately captivating. Another fan said Jon Hamm is really in his element.
