The People’s Choice Awards 2024 witnessed a surprising upset as pop star Billie Eilish won the award for Best TV Performance for her role in the Amazon Prime series Swarm, defeating veteran actress Meryl Streep who was nominated for her role in the Hulu series Only Murders in The Building.
Billie Eilish’s Acting Debut in Swarm
Swarm is a comedy horror thriller miniseries created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabors. It follows the story of Dre, a young woman who is obsessed with a pop star and goes to extreme lengths to defend her reputation. Eilish appeared in the fourth episode of the series as Eva, the leader of a cult-like group of women who take in Dre. The series was Billie Eilish’s first-ever acting credit and received positive reviews for its direction, cinematography, soundtrack, and balance between bright aesthetics and psychological horror elements.
Billie Eilish thanked Glover for being her lifelong inspiration and dedicated the award to her co-star Dominique Fishback, who played Dre. “She brought her whole cooch into that show,” Billie Eilish said. “And she really carried the hell out of it. She taught me everything I know. That whole experience I owe to her. She deserves this more than I do. She’s incredible, she is beautiful, she is talented, she should be cast in everything forever.”
Streep’s Role in Only Murders in The Building
Only Murders in The Building is a comedy mystery series created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. It stars Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three strangers who live in the same apartment building and share an obsession with true crime podcasts. They decide to investigate a murder that occurs in their building and start their own podcast. Streep joined the cast in the third season as Bitsy Brandenham, a wealthy socialite who owns the building and has a mysterious past.
