The newest and final chapter in the main Conjuring series, The Conjuring: Last Rites, brings Ed and Lorraine Warren’s on-screen story to a close. While the movie is set in Pennsylvania, USA, the real filming took place entirely across the Atlantic in England. The production used locations and studios in the UK to double for American settings.

The Main Filming Locations in England

The entire movie was filmed in England, with Hertfordshire and London serving as the primary production hubs. Filming started on September 16, 2024, and wrapped up on November 22, 2024, making for a compact shooting schedule of just over two months.

One of the most important locations was Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire. This historical estate, known for its Gothic architecture and large gardens, was used for several outdoor scenes. Its spooky and grand feel made it the perfect spot for scenes involving a haunted mirror.

The Warren family’s home, a key location throughout the film series, was also recreated in Hertfordshire. The production team built sets to show the house in both the 1960s and 1980s, as the story moves between two different time periods.

In London, the production used soundstages to build interior sets. These included the inside of the Smurl family’s haunted house and a church where a major confrontation happens. Neighborhoods in London were also made to look like streets in Pennsylvania from the 1980s.

Why England and Not America?

You might wonder why a movie based on a true American story was filmed in the UK. The answer often comes down to production resources. Warner Bros. has a major studio facility in Hertfordshire, which has been used for many big movies like all the Harry Potter films and Star Wars: Episode I.

This studio complex provided the space and technical support needed for the horror film’s complex sets and special effects. By using existing infrastructure, the production could be more efficient.

A Peek at the Real Places

The movie is inspired by the alleged haunting of the Smurl family in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Their real house is at 328 Chase Street, but the production did not film there. Instead, the film’s version of the Smurl house was built on sets in London.

Similarly, the real Warren home and occult museum in Monroe, Connecticut, was recreated for the film in England. This allowed the filmmakers to have full control over the environment for shooting.

The People Behind the Scenes

Michael Chaves returned to direct this film after directing the previous movie, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Nun II. The screenplay was written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, based on a story by Johnson-McGoldrick and James Wan.

A notable change was in the music. Composer Benjamin Wallfisch created the score, replacing Joseph Bishara who worked on earlier films in the series.

A Final Word on the Filming

The choice to film in England shows how modern movies often use global resources. Even though the story is American, the UK’s film industry offered the right locations, studios, and crew to bring this supernatural tale to life. The use of Knebworth Park and London soundstages helped create the dark and scary mood that Conjuring fans expect.

The movie was released in the United States on September 5, 2025.
