Anna Finds Crystal and Uncovers the Truth About Melissa’s Murder
Anna arrives at Bluff’s Point on the Cape Fear River hoping to find Crystal Cady’s houseboat, but the boat is gone. She visits Max’s childhood home and meets his father Robert Cady (Ron Perlman), who refuses to help her. After getting drunk at a local bar, Anna wakes up the next morning aboard Crystal’s houseboat, with her gun taken for “safekeeping”.
The conversation between Anna and Crystal becomes the centerpiece of the episode. Crystal admits she keeps photos of Max’s crimes as insurance to stop him from coming after her. She also reveals that Amy Brancato, Max’s former mistress who took the blame for his wife’s murder, had her life destroyed after Max came back into it.
Anna and Crystal visit Amy’s trailer, where Anna finds a wall covered with newspaper clippings about Max, along with childhood photos of Amy and Crystal together. Max Cady’s Prison Visit Pushes Tom Toward a Terrible Decision
Max Cady visits Tom Bowden in prison early in the episode, gloating about how he put Tom behind bars for a crime he did not commit. As a parting gift, Max tells Tom that one of his friends will leave something in his cell. That gift turns out to be a noose made from bedsheets.
Max later calls Tom and tries to convince him to hang himself, just like Tom’s brother did decades earlier. He promises that Tom’s children will remain safe if he takes his own life. Tom refuses at first, but the situation changes after he calls the psychiatric facility where Zack is being treated. Staff members reveal that Zack has escaped with help from someone outside the hospital.
Max had earlier hinted that he knew Zack’s location, making Tom realize the threat against his family is real. Tom leaves helpless voice messages for Jared, Noa, and Anna as his phone battery runs low. Max calls him again, asking him to end his life, and Tom looks at the noose helplessly. The episode strongly implies that Tom might follow Max’s orders in the finale.
Natalie Manipulates Nevaeh in Prison
Natalie Bowden finds herself in danger inside the same prison as Nevaeh, who has been secretly carrying out Max’s instructions. Using a burner phone, Max orders Nevaeh to find Anna’s whereabouts and kill Natalie. During their time together, Nevaeh admits that Max instructed her to break into the Bowden home, spike the family’s tea with acid, and seduce Zack. However, she reveals that her relationship with Natalie was her own decision rather than part of Max’s original plan.
Natalie notices Nevaeh using the burner phone and confronts her. The encounter turns intimate, and during pillow talk, Natalie learns more about Max’s plans. When Nevaeh reveals that Max ordered her to kill Natalie, Natalie offers her a way out by betraying Max. When Nevaeh refuses, Natalie takes matters into her own hands and steals the burner phone from Nevaeh’s Bible while she sleeps.
Nevaeh wakes up to find her phone gone and Natalie being bailed out by Noa. The episode leaves it unclear whether Natalie’s sweet talk was genuine or just a way to buy time.
The Scar Reveals Max’s Darkest Family Secret
The episode’s title refers to the scar on Luke’s body, which Anna notices and connects to the photographs. When Anna reveals to Luke that Crystal is his mother, the boy is caught off guard. He knew Crystal was his mom, but the revelation that Max is his father sends him into a spiral.
The confrontation on the houseboat turns violent. Crystal stabs Anna through the hand, and Luke attacks his mother and grandfather, giving Anna the chance to escape by diving into the river moments before Max arrives. The episode ends with Anna fleeing through the water, leaving a trail of blood, while Max is hot on her trail.
Crystal’s confession that she killed Melissa because she could not stand seeing Max play happy families with her adds a tragic dimension to the story. However, Max’s immediate text message to Crystal after her confession leads some to believe there may still be more to the story.

Reviews for “The Scar” have been mixed. IGN criticized the episode for being a “featherweight filler episode” that commits the sin of being boring right when the series needs to be firing on all cylinders. The publication noted that while there are a few wild moments, the episode fails to deliver the intensity expected from a penultimate chapter.
Other outlets offered more balanced takes. TV Fanatic praised the episode for delivering answers galore and setting up a killer finale, singling out Juliette Lewis for an awards-worthy performance. Ready Steady Cut took a more positive view, noting that the episode plays things relatively straight with dialed-down performances and revelations that actually make sense. The review described it as a fairly taut dramatic exercise as Max turns the screws on his victims.
What Episode 9 Reveals About the Season’s Biggest Mysteries
“The Scar” answers several major questions that have been building throughout the season. Viewers finally learn that Crystal Cady, not Max, killed Melissa and her unborn child. The episode also confirms that Max has been manipulating Nevaeh the entire time and that she has been his direct accomplice. Part of Max’s endgame is to have Nevaeh kill Natalie so Anna can feel the pain of losing a child, just like Max did.
The revelation that Max has a son with his sister adds another disturbing layer to his character. Whether Max knows about Luke’s existence remains unclear, leaving a major question for the finale to answer.
The episode also shows that Noa survives her confrontation with Max after he receives new information about Anna’s location. Zack, meanwhile, remains largely absent from the episode, with critics noting the frustrating underuse of Joe Anders in the back half of the season.
