The Seoul High Court has rejected NewJeans‘ appeal to terminate their contract with ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE. The court ruled that the group must continue working under ADORโs management, marking the third legal win for the agency in this ongoing dispute. Meanwhile, member Danielle made her first public appearance at an Omega event in Japan, raising questions about whether the group has resumed activities with ADOR.
NewJeans, who rebranded as NJZ earlier this year, had tried to leave ADOR, claiming mistreatment and breach of contract. However, the court found no evidence supporting their claims and upheld ADORโs exclusive management rights. The group must now pay 1 billion KRW (around $730,000 USD) per member for any unauthorized activities.
Danielle attended the Omega AquaTerra 30mm Launching Event in Kyoto, Japan, on June 18. She was accompanied by ADOR staff, confirming that her appearance was pre-approved. As a global ambassador for Omega, Danielleโs participation was part of her existing contract obligations.
ADOR released a statement urging NewJeans to return to group activities ahead of their third debut anniversary in July. The agency promised full support for the groupโs future projects. However, NewJeans has remained silent on whether they will comply.
The legal battle began in November 2024 when NewJeans announced their departure from ADOR. The agency quickly filed a lawsuit to block their independent activities. Courts have consistently ruled in ADORโs favor, reinforcing the validity of the original contract.
“We sincerely appreciate the courtโs decision. We hope this ruling serves as an opportunity for the members to return to their rightful place as NewJeans and resume their activities.” โ ADORโs official statement
Fans are divided on the issue. Some support NewJeansโ fight for independence, while others believe they should honor their contract. The groupโs future remains uncertain as legal proceedings continue.
NewJeans performed as NJZ at Hong Kongโs ComplexCon in March but hinted it might be their last show for a while. The courtโs injunction prevents them from using the NJZ name or promoting independently.
ADOR has warned that any unauthorized activities will result in heavy fines. The agency is focused on preparing for NewJeansโ upcoming anniversary, hoping for a resolution that allows the group to continue under its management.
Danielleโs Omega appearance was her first public event since the legal dispute escalated. Fans noted her blonde bob hairstyle and stylish outfit, sparking discussions online. Some questioned if her appearance signaled a return to ADOR, but sources confirmed it was a pre-scheduled commitment.
The courtโs decision strengthens ADORโs position in the ongoing lawsuit over contract validity. NewJeans previously argued that trust with the agency was broken, but the judges dismissed these claims due to lack of evidence.
With the anniversary approaching, pressure is mounting on both sides to resolve the conflict. ADOR has expressed willingness to support the group, but NewJeans has not indicated any plans to return.
Industry experts say the case could set a precedent for K-pop contract disputes. Many agencies closely monitor the outcome, as it may influence future artist-label negotiations.
NewJeans debuted in July 2022 under ADOR and quickly rose to global fame. Their legal battle has drawn international attention, with fans worldwide hoping for a positive resolution.
