Warner Bros. just dropped major news about the new Ocean’s movie. During their big CinemaCon event in Las Vegas on April 14, the studio confirmed that Bradley Cooper will write, direct, and star in the upcoming Ocean’s prequel alongside Margot Robbie. The film already has a release date set for June 25, 2027. Robbie appeared through video to share what the movie is about. She said the story follows Danny Ocean’s parents as they pull off a major heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.
Margot Robbie Reveals Ocean’s Prequel Plot Set During 1962 Monaco Grand Prix
The new Ocean’s prequel takes viewers back in time. Robbie explained that the movie is not about Danny Ocean himself. Instead, it focuses on the people who taught him everything about pulling off big robberies. “Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows: his parents,” Robbie said during her virtual appearance at CinemaCon. “You’ll see them in all their prime in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.”
The Monaco Grand Prix setting is a big change from the Las Vegas casinos fans know from the original Ocean’s movies. The 1962 race was a major event for rich and famous people from around the world. This makes it the perfect place for a high-stakes heist. Cooper and Robbie are expected to play the parents of Danny Ocean, the character George Clooney played in the Steven Soderbergh trilogy.
Bradley Cooper Takes on Writing, Directing and Starring Roles After Director Changes
Getting to this point was not easy for the Ocean’s prequel. The project had two different directors attached before Cooper came on board. Lee Isaac Chung, who directed Minari, was first to sign on. He left the project in March due to creative differences. After him, Jay Roach, known for the Austin Powers movies, was in talks. But he also stepped away.
Now Warner Bros. has confirmed that Cooper is taking full control. He will write the screenplay, direct the movie, and star in it. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about Cooper’s triple duty role. Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the heads of Warner Bros., made the announcement at the end of the studio’s CinemaCon presentation.
This will be Cooper’s fourth time directing a movie. He previously directed A Star Is Born (2018), Maestro (2023), and the recent Is This Thing On? (2025). Both A Star Is Born and Maestro received Best Picture nominations at the Oscars.
Robbie Produces Through LuckyChap as Filming Starts Later in 2026
Robbie is not just starring in the Ocean’s prequel. She is also producing the movie through her company LuckyChap Entertainment. This is the same production company behind Barbie, I Tonya, and Saltburn. Robbie has worked with Warner Bros. many times before. Her partnership with the studio includes Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, and the record-breaking Barbie movie.
Cooper is also producing the film alongside Robbie. The movie does not have an official title yet. Warner Bros. is still calling it the “Ocean’s prequel” for now. Production is scheduled to begin later in 2026. This timeline gives the team enough time to finish the movie for its June 2027 release.

Original Ocean’s Cast May Return for Separate Sequel Movie
While the prequel is moving forward, another Ocean’s movie is also in the works. George Clooney has talked about a fourth movie that would bring back the original cast. This separate project would include Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Casey Affleck. Clooney shared in 2023 that they have a strong script ready.
Clooney told E! News that the cast hopes to film the sequel in 2026. He described the idea as similar to the 1979 heist comedy Going in Style. That movie followed three older friends who decide to rob a bank. The original Ocean’s trilogy includes Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007). An all-female spin-off, Ocean’s Eight, came out in 2018 with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett.
Fans on social media shared mixed reactions to the prequel news. Many expressed excitement about seeing Cooper and Robbie work together for the first time. Others questioned whether a prequel about Danny Ocean’s parents is necessary. The 1962 Monaco Grand Prix setting has drawn positive attention for its glamorous and unique backdrop. Production is expected to begin later in 2026, with the movie arriving in theaters on June 25, 2027 for audiences in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and worldwide.
