The second episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 delivered one of the biggest moments fans have been waiting for. Rhaenyra Targaryen finally enters King’s Landing and sits on the Iron Throne. But the victory is far from complete. The very battle designed to secure her claim led to Aegon’s escape, leaving the war far from over.

The episode, titled “Rhaenyra the Cruel,” aired on June 28, 2026, on HBO and Max in the US. UK viewers caught it on June 29 at 2:00 AM BST on Sky Atlantic and NOW. Indian audiences can stream it on Disney+ Hotstar starting June 29.

A Hollow Victory After the Battle of the Gullet

The episode picks up right after the Battle of the Gullet from the season premiere. The battle did destroy much of the Triarchy’s fleet. But it also cost Rhaenyra her eldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon, who died in the fighting.

When Baela Targaryen returns to Dragonstone with Jace’s body, the triumph of the battle means nothing. Rhaenyra breaks down completely. She asks her dead son, “What have you done?” and shakes his body as if she could wake him. Emma D’Arcy’s performance in this scene shows a mother’s raw grief before any queen’s duty.

Emma D’Arcy told TheWrap that she played the scene from a place of denial. “It’s an impossible reality that’s sort of dawning. When she says, ‘What have you done?’ I wanted to actually ask it โ€” I didn’t want it to become rhetorical. I wanted her to hope to get enough hope for an answer,” D’Arcy said.

Daemon Returns to Push the War Forward

Daemon Targaryen learns about Jace’s death while celebrating a victory of his own. He returns to Dragonstone to stand beside Rhaenyra. But he is not just there for emotional support. He pushes her to take action.

Daemon tells Rhaenyra they cannot let Jace’s death be for nothing. He shares information that Aemond and Vhagar have left King’s Landing for Harrenhal. This is the moment to strike.

Rhaenyra is broken and questions whether the Iron Throne is even worth the cost anymore. But Daemon reminds her of the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy. He tells her about his visions at Harrenhal of a lady with silver hair and dragons at her breast. He insists her fight is about a destiny greater than herself. This speech finally moves Rhaenyra to agree to take the capital.

Alicent Prepares King’s Landing for Surrender

Inside King’s Landing, Alicent Hightower works to honor her secret deal with Rhaenyra. She convinces the City Watch to stand down when Rhaenyra arrives. Queen Helaena holds authority in Aegon’s absence, and she supports Alicent’s plan to end the bloodshed.

Alicent tells Commander Luthor Largent, “Some would call that treason. The question is, would you?” Largent backs her, and the guards are ordered not to fire on Rhaenyra’s forces.

But not everything goes smoothly. Lord Jasper Wylde corners Alicent. He assaults her, forcing her to smash a stone across his face in self-defense. Grand Maester Orwyle arrives and arrests Jasper instead of Alicent.

Aegon Escapes with Larys Strong

The biggest complication in Rhaenyra’s plan is Aegon’s escape. The episode shows Aegon and Larys Strong arguing in a carriage as they flee the capital. Aegon refuses to forgive Larys for revealing their identities to captors.

Their bickering is interrupted when soldiers ambush them. Aegon stabs a man in the back during the fight. After the attack, Larys wants to head toward Duskendale, but Aegon insists on Rook’s Rest, where Ser Criston Cole has a loyal garrison. Aegon is still choosing pride over caution.

Larys Strong leaves Daemon a “gift” before escaping: Otto Hightower, who was being held in the dungeons. This gift changes everything.

Rhaenyra Takes the Throne and Beheads Otto

Rhaenyra and Daemon fly to King’s Landing on Syrax and Caraxes. Hugh Hammer and Ulf White fly cover on Vermithor and Silverwing. When they arrive, the city offers little resistance thanks to Alicent’s orders.

Inside the Red Keep, some soldiers try to resist, but the Gold Cloaks stand with Daemon. A path to the Iron Throne is cleared. But Rhaenyra needs Aegon’s head.

Daemon learns from Grand Maester Orwyle that Aegon is gone. But he has something else: Otto Hightower. Daemon drags Otto to the throne room.

Otto begs Daemon to be the one to kill him, so he wouldn’t be hacked at. But Daemon hands Dark Sister to Rhaenyra and tells her, “This is the moment you become queen.”

Rhaenyra hesitates, her hands shaking. Otto was her father’s best friend and a figure from her childhood. But she swings the sword. The first cut is not clean. She has to try again. She finally beheads Otto. Daemon then cleanly takes Jasper Wylde’s head.

Rhaenyra walks toward the Iron Throne with blood on her boots. She finally sits down and claims the seat she has fought so long for.

Alicent Walks into a Nightmare

The episode’s final moments deliver the biggest emotional blow. Alicent and Helaena try to escape King’s Landing but are caught and brought back. They are led into the throne room.

Alicent walks through the massive room, not immediately seeing what the commotion is about. Then she sees it: her father’s dead body lying in a pool of blood.

Olivia Cooke told TheWrap that Alicent feels “incredibly betrayed” in this moment. “She feels like she was caught up in yet another person’s scheming. It feels like it was all for nothing, and she’s in a worse position than where she started,” Cooke said.

Emma D’Arcy noted that seeing Alicent’s reaction robs Rhaenyra of her triumph. “She sees through any artifice or armor that Rhaenyra might have built up,” D’Arcy said.

The War Is Far from Over

The episode ends with Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne, but the war is still far from won. Aegon is still at large. Aemond is alive, though wounded after attacking Harrenhal. The kingdom remains deeply divided.

Cooke teased that more “carnage” is coming as the season continues. The peaceful transition Alicent hoped for has been stained with blood. Rhaenyra’s “victory” is hollow, and the Dance of the Dragons is far from over.
