Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has finally arrived in theatres worldwide, and the response from Indian audiences has been nothing short of remarkable. The film, which released on July 17, 2026, has created an unusual theatre experience across India — packed houses sitting in complete silence for nearly three hours.
The Hindustan Times reported a first-hand account of watching Nolan’s epic in a houseful Indian theatre where the audience remained absolutely quiet throughout the screening. No phones, no chatter, no interruptions — just hundreds of people completely absorbed in the cinematic spectacle.
The film marks Nolan’s first official premiere in India, with the director along with stars Matt Damon and Tom Holland landing in Mumbai on July 10 for a special screening. During the event, Nolan called Indian audiences “some of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable cinematic audiences in the world”.
The Perfect Theatre Experience
Watching The Odyssey in a packed Indian theatre turned out to be something special. The audience stayed completely silent for the entire runtime of 2 hours, 52 minutes and 33 seconds. No one pulled out their phones. No one talked. Everyone was simply present in the moment.

Film Clears Indian Censors Without Any Cuts

The makers received the censor certificate on July 9, just days before the worldwide release. The film’s runtime is listed as 172.33 minutes. This is a significant achievement, especially compared to Nolan’s previous film Oppenheimer, which had to undergo some censorship in India.

The film features an ensemble cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus, and Zendaya appears as Athena.
Robert Pattinson plays the menacing Antinous, while Lupita Nyong’o portrays Helen of Troy. Charlize Theron also joins the cast as Calypso. The supporting cast includes Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo, and Mia Goth.
First Feature Shot Entirely on IMAX Film
The Odyssey makes history as the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX film cameras. Nolan worked with IMAX to develop lighter, quieter equipment capable of handling dialogue-heavy scenes. The film was shot across six countries over a 91-day period spanning six months.
The team used real ships on real seas and filmed in far-flung locations to create an authentic experience. Matt Damon revealed that Nolan warned him the shoot would be extremely difficult.
“He told me it was going to be hard, which I kind of, I blew off at first. I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah, it’s going to be hard.’ And he said ‘no, no, this is going to be really hard.’ He did not disappoint.”
Strong Box Office Opening in India
The Odyssey got off to a powerful start at the Indian box office. The film earned an estimated Rs 17.40 crore net on its opening day across all languages. The gross collection stood at approximately Rs 20.76 crore.
The film was screened across 8,413 shows nationwide and recorded an overall theatre occupancy of 48.7 per cent. The English version contributed the most with Rs 13.75 crore net, followed by Hindi (Rs 1.90 crore), Telugu (Rs 1.10 crore), and Tamil (Rs 65 lakh).
The film also earned USD 17.6 million from preview screenings internationally, marking the biggest preview haul of the year. Industry projections suggest an opening weekend between USD 90 million and USD 100 million in North America.
Indian Audiences Compare Film to Ramayana
One sequence in The Odyssey has become the biggest talking point among Indian audiences. Social media is filled with posts pointing out striking similarities between the film’s climax and a famous moment from the Ramayana.
In the climax, Odysseus returns to his kingdom disguised as a beggar. To prove his identity, he strings his legendary bow — a feat no one else can accomplish — and fires an arrow through a row of axes. For Indian viewers, this instantly brings to mind Sita’s swayamvar in Mithila, where only Lord Rama could lift and break Shiva’s mighty bow.
Both epics revolve around a king’s difficult journey home after years of separation. The themes of exile, homecoming, and unwavering loyalty connect the two stories in ways that feel deeply familiar to Indian audiences.
Nolan’s Mumbai Premiere Experience
Nolan made history by choosing Mumbai as an official stop on the global premiere tour alongside London, Paris, and New York. This marked the director’s first official film premiere in India.
During the Mumbai event, Nolan spoke directly to the audience after the screening. He asked the crowd if they liked the film, and they responded with loud cheers. He also joked about the performances of Matt Damon and Tom Holland, asking the audience who was better.
“I am coming to Mumbai again! This is not the first time I am here in Mumbai. But it is the first time that we get the chance to launch a film here. So you are among the first audiences in the world to see this film!”
Nolan also shared his long connection with India. He filmed parts of The Dark Knight Rises at Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur in 2011 and shot sequences for Tenet in Mumbai in 2019.
“Thank you so much for being here. Thank you for welcoming us. It is always a thrill to be in India. Every time we come here, it’s very, very special.”
