Spider-Man: Brand New Day has arrived in theatres and is already breaking records. The movie, which marks Tom Holland‘s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker, has become the highest non-Indian opener ever, surpassing Avengers: Endgame from 2019. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film has received strong praise for its action, visual style, and performances from the cast including Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal.
The movie picks up right after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), with Peter Parker starting a new chapter after everyone forgot who he is. Parker-Less Marvel Intro
The standard Marvel Studios intro gets a special update for this film. The montage features scenes from previous MCU Spider-Man movies, but with one noticeable change. Peter Parker is missing from the footage. This is a direct reference to the spell cast by Doctor Strange at the end of No Way Home, which erased everyone’s memory of Peter Parker’s identity.
Recreating Covers of Spider-Man Comics
The opening sequence shows Spider-Man fighting various villains. These are not random action scenes. Each shot is a recreation of a classic Spider-Man comic book cover. The list includes references to Amazing Fantasy No. 15, Spider-Man Adventures No. 2, The Spectacular Spider-Man No. 142, The Spectacular Spider-Man No. 1, The Amazing Spider-Man No. 221, and The Amazing Spider-Man No. 345. The only non-Spider-Man cover in this sequence is his fight with The Hand, which takes inspiration from New Avengers No. 27.
Cindy Moon
During a class taught by Bruce Banner, a student asks a question about Thanos. That student is named Cindy Moon. Comic book readers will recognise her as the secret identity of Silk, a superhero with powers similar to Spider-Man. In the comics, she is also a love interest for Peter Parker. Cindy Moon previously appeared as a classmate of Peter in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), played by a different actress.
A ‘Motherly’ Reunion
Peter Parker gets a new AI assistant in this movie called E.V. The voice behind this AI belongs to actress Naomi Watts. This casting choice has a special connection to Tom Holland. Watts starred in the survival drama The Impossible (2012), which was based on the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. In that film, a 14-year-old Tom Holland played her son.
Damage Control Scanning
During the final battle, Spider-Man fights The Hand and discovers that Damage Control has created weapons that can neutralise his powers. The movie shows how they got this information. Earlier, when Peter first visited the Damage Control department, he unknowingly stepped into a scanner cubicle that collected all his data.
The Hulk Plot Hole
There is a scene where The Hulk remembers Peter Parker’s identity during a fight. This moment is actually a recreation of a panel from the comic Immortal Hulk: Great Power. However, there is a small inconsistency. Bruce Banner only knew Peter when he was Smart Hulk. The real Hulk has not met Peter because he refused to come out after being beaten by Thanos in Infinity War. Also, Peter tells Bruce that he is his friend, but the movies never really showed them bonding before.
Spider-Man Being English
Spider-Man’s tracking board includes some funny details. One note questions whether Spider-Man is English. Spider-Man: Brand New Day shares some similarities with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 (2007). Both films show Peter dealing with physical changes that make him more powerful but also more aggressive. Both movies also have Peter consulting a professor. In Spider-Man 3, it was Dr. Curt Connors. In this film, it is Bruce Banner. Both movies also include a storyline where Peter’s girlfriend has feelings for someone else, and both feature scenes where Spider-Man is celebrated by the city.
The Daredevil Connection
Spider-Man and Daredevil operate in the same city, which is why Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) appeared as Peter’s lawyer in No Way Home. Brand New Day has more Daredevil connections. The Punisher, who appeared in the Daredevil series, is a key character in this film. The city’s mayor, Sheila Rivera, used to be Wilson Fisk’s mayoral aide. Punisher Carrying Spider-Man
A scene shows The Punisher carrying an injured Spider-Man to the hospital. This is a recreation of a panel from Civil War No. 5. In the comics, Punisher was carrying Spider-Man’s badly injured body to Captain America after the web-slinger was beaten by Iron Man’s forces.
The Nod to Insomniac’s Spider-Man Games
The action scenes and web-swinging in Brand New Day show a strong influence from Insomniac’s Spider-Man video games. The short rooftop fights during the montage are a clear nod to those games. Even a scene where a pigeon gets stuck to Spider-Man while he tries to swing feels like a reference to the pigeon-catching side missions in Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and its sequel.
MJ’s Picture
During the hospital scene, Spider-Man receives many gifts from fans. One gift that stands out is a drawing that MJ made while watching Peter and Ned bond at their flat. This means she did visit him in the hospital before going to the terrace where they used to meet during No Way Home. She is also seen holding the locket Peter gave her in Far From Home. The big question is whether she is starting to remember Peter or simply trying to recreate forgotten moments based on what he told her.
The X-Men Movie Setup?
During Peter’s last conversation with Detective Jean DeWolff, she mentions that Bill Metzger has gone missing after the climax. This character is a minor X-Men villain from the comics who leads an anti-mutant campaign. The film also shows his hostility towards mutants through his treatment of Jean Grey and her sister. Jean Grey is also seen heading to a place with plenty of vegetation, which fans believe is Westchester, the location of the Xavier school for mutants. This could be setting up the MCU’s upcoming X-Men storyline.

The finale leaves viewers with a big question. Has Ned Leeds started remembering Peter Parker, or is he simply figuring things out? When Peter reintroduces himself at the cafe, Ned does not remember his name at first because Peter gives a false name, Maynard. However, Ned unconsciously replicates their secret handshake, possibly because of muscle memory. His slow realisation could come from hearing MJ call Spider-Man “Peter” when he leaves to rescue Jean Grey. Spider-Man was also the one person who truly understood his nerd culture, so that realisation eventually dawns on him. The movie suggests that Ned is not remembering through lost memories but simply figuring things out based on their current interactions.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently showing in theatres worldwide. With its record-breaking opening and positive reviews, the film has given audiences plenty to talk about. The hidden details and comic book references add extra layers for fans who want to watch the movie again.
