Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Steps, an animated musical comedy that flips the classic Cinderella story by putting the so-called “evil” stepsisters at the heart of the action. Ali Wong voices Lilith, a stepsister tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow, while Amanda Seyfried lends her voice to Cinderella herself. The film arrives on Netflix on November 20, 2026.
What Happens in the Steps Teaser Trailer
The trailer opens with narration describing the familiar Cinderella tale, complete with princes, glass slippers, and royal balls. Lilith quickly interrupts to set the record straight about “the real story.” Her version includes revenge, high-speed chases, and a surprisingly handsome troll named Gef, voiced by Young Mazino.
Footage shows Lilith and her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu) stealing the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand and hijacking the Royal Ball. The chaos that follows undoes the story audiences know, leaving the kingdom vulnerable to a schemer named Priscilla (Nikki Glaser), who seizes the throne.
Lilith must then team up with Cinderella to fix the mess. Their quest takes them through biker trolls, evil henchmen, and the ominously named Screaming Woods. Along the way, they work to save both the kingdom and their fractured relationship.
Ali Wong Leads as the Misunderstood Stepsister
Ali Wong takes on the role of Lilith, the stepsister who has grown tired of being cast as the villain. Wong is known for her work in the Netflix series Beef and her stand-up comedy specials. In Steps, her character drives the story’s central conflict after stealing the Fairy Godmother’s wand.
Lilith’s actions set off a chain of events that break the Cinderella narrative. She accidentally turns her sister Margot into a frog, dooming the kingdom to Priscilla’s tyrannical rule. To set things right, she has to do the unthinkable: work with Cinderella.
Amanda Seyfried Voices a Modern Cinderella
Amanda Seyfried voices Cinderella, stepping into a role that has been portrayed countless times on screen. Seyfried is known for her roles in Mean Girls, Mamma Mia!, and The Housemaid. Her previous voice work includes Scoob! and Epic.
Co-director Alyce Tzue spoke about casting Seyfried in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Tzue said Seyfried has an incredible ability to make characters specific and relatable, which was needed for a character as legendary as Cinderella. Tzue added that they wanted to create a modern heroine with flaws and coping mechanisms, and Seyfried immediately understood the task.
A Star-Studded Voice Cast Brings the Kingdom to Life
Daniel Radcliffe voices the Prince, a character described as unconventional and quirky. Director John Ripa said Radcliffe brought his unique brand of big-hearted humor to the role, creating a character that is irresistible and delightful.
Bette Midler voices the Fairy Godmother, a bumbling schemer whose wand sets the plot in motion. Midler is known for Hocus Pocus, Beaches, and her award-winning stage work.
Peter Dinklage voices Roderick, a dangerous nanny who hunts Lilith and Cinderella. Nikki Glaser plays Priscilla, the villain who takes over the kingdom. Young Mazino voices Gef, the heartthrob troll. Damian Priest rounds out the cast as Cracktor.
Who Is Behind the Camera
Steps is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa. Tzue makes her feature directing debut, while Ripa co-directed Raya and the Last Dragon. The film is produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing. Poehler and Lessing produce through Paper Kite Productions.
The screenplay comes from Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Jen Chuck, Dana Schwartz, and Felicia Ho. The story originates from an idea by Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci of the comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates. Kris Bowers composed the score.
Netflix Animation’s Growing Slate
Steps is Netflix Animation Studios’ first end-to-end production, meaning it did not rely on partner studios or vendor studios. The film follows the massive success of KPop Demon Hunters, which became Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Netflix’s end-of-year animation slate also includes In Waves and Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn. Steps arrives on the streaming service in time for Thanksgiving, a prime release window for animated films.
