What Happened in Episode 22

Episode 22 aired on September 19, 2026, and it delivered one of the most significant introductions of the season. Charlotte, the eldest daughter of Sylvester and Florencia, made her first appearance in the anime. Voice actress Kaede Hondo joined the cast for the role. Charlotte is Rozemyne’s adoptive younger sister, and her arrival opens a new layer of family dynamics inside the archduke’s castle.

Episode 22 also featured the ruelle fruit rechallenge. Rozemyne and her team returned to the gathering grounds after failing to collect the fruit the previous year. Ferdinand and Karstedt joined from the start to provide protection against feybeasts. The episode balanced quiet character moments with rising tension, as nobles from the former Veronica faction continued plotting behind the scenes.

Fans who watched Episode 21 saw Georgine return to Ahrensbach after her visit to Ehrenfest. A private meeting among nobles revealed that Georgine has found a path to Ehrenfest’s Foundation, which could allow her to seize the position of Archduke. Lord Grausam and his allies discussed using Wilfried by tarnishing his reputation, forcing Sylvester to rescue him and creating an opening for a new power grab.

How Episode 23 Shifts the Story Forward

Episode 23 is titled around Rozemyne staying at the castle with Wilfried while the archduke and his wife are away. This setup places Rozemyne in a direct and prolonged interaction with Wilfried, a character whose flaws and resistance to responsibility have caused friction throughout the season.

The official synopsis for Episode 23 confirms that with the archduke and his wife away, Rozemyne must stay at the castle with Wilfried. This is the first time the two adoptive siblings are left to manage the castle together without adult supervision. Previous episodes showed Rozemyne growing frustrated with Wilfried’s complaints, eventually offering to switch roles with him for a day. That experiment revealed how unprepared Wilfried is for leadership, and Episode 23 builds directly on that tension.

The stakes are higher than a simple sibling dispute. The former Veronica faction’s plot to use Wilfried as a tool for regaining power means every interaction between Rozemyne and Wilfried carries political weight. Rozemyne’s decisions at the castle could either strengthen Wilfried’s position or expose him as a liability. The episode also continues the ruelle fruit storyline, as the potion brewing with Ferdinand depends on successfully gathering the fruit.

The anime ran into controversy in April 2026 when WIT Studio confirmed that generative AI was used in the opening sequence for Episode 1 of Season 4. The studio apologized and redrew the opening with human artists, releasing a gen-AI-free version from Episode 2 onward.

The protagonist’s original identity is Urano Motosu, a Japanese college student and aspiring librarian who dies in an earthquake and is reborn as Myne in a world where books are scarce and reserved for nobles. The story’s central conflict is not about fighting monsters but about building an industry. Myne uses modern knowledge to create paper, ink, and printing presses from scratch, slowly transforming a society that treats books as luxury items.

The light novel’s Part 3 concludes with Volume 5, which the current anime season adapts. The volume description states that “shocking developments abound in this climactic conclusion to Part 3” and that the events “will change Rozemyne’s future forever.” The final episodes of the anime are covering this climactic material.

Ascendance of a Bookworm has 24 episodes in its fourth season. Episode 24 will air on October 3, 2026, and will serve as the final episode of the “Adopted Daughter of an Archduke” arc.
