Barbie director Greta Gerwig’s next cinematic endeavor takes her to Netflix, where she will reimagine C.S. Lewis’ classic series, The Chronicles of Narnia. The anticipated project, which has been stirring interest since its announcement, is expected to release in December 2026.

Netflix’s Journey to Narnia Rights

Netflix acquired the rights to all seven books in The Chronicles of Narnia back in 2018, a groundbreaking move for the beloved franchise. However, development remained stagnant until 2023, when Gerwig, fresh off her Barbie success, signed on as the writer and director. Gerwig’s involvement has since heightened anticipation, with her knack for imaginative storytelling aligning perfectly with the rich, fantastical world of Narnia.

Gerwig’s Vision for the Series

According to Collider, actor Jason Isaacs may have unintentionally revealed a crucial detail about Gerwig’s plans. In an interview with The Week, Isaacs praised the series and hinted that Gerwig could be adapting The Magician’s Nephew, the prequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. “I loved all the Narnia books as a kid,” Isaacs said. “When Peter was told he wouldn’t be coming back, I understood something devastating about mortality. I picked this one because Greta Gerwig is about to make a film of it, which I can’t wait to see.”

While Netflix has not confirmed Isaacs’ statement, fans speculate that The Magician’s Nephew could set the tone for a comprehensive adaptation of the entire series.

Challenges in Theatrical and Streaming Plans

Bloomberg and Puck News report that negotiations are ongoing regarding the format of the release. Gerwig reportedly advocates for a broad theatrical release, including potential IMAX screenings, to give the series a grand debut before transitioning to streaming. This approach contrasts Netflix’s typical release strategy, sparking internal discussions about setting a precedent for high-budget theatrical ventures. IMAX, meanwhile, is reportedly ensuring the film meets its quality standards before committing to the deal.

If successful, this adaptation would mark the first time all seven books in the Narnia series have been tackled by a single production company. Disney and Walden Media’s earlier films—The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)—only covered three of the novels, leaving the remaining stories unexplored.

Fans’ Expectations

Gerwig’s ability to breathe fresh life into well-loved stories, as seen with Barbie and Little Women, has set high expectations. With each Narnia book offering unique adventures across different time periods and characters, the potential for an expansive cinematic universe is immense. Fans are eager to see how Gerwig will interpret the series’ themes of morality, faith, and imagination in her signature style.

For those nostalgic for the original Narnia films, they are currently available for streaming on Hulu, Disney+, and Max.
