The father-son relationship between Danny and Sean Reagan faces new challenges on the CBS series Boston Blue. Actor Mika Amonsen, who plays Sean, has revealed that his character’s new romantic relationship introduces significant complications, testing his bond with his father, played by Donnie Wahlberg.
Sean’s New Love Interest Causes Friction
In the recent episode titled “Code of Ethics,” Sean Reagan met a new love interest named Penny, portrayed by Xochitl Gomez. The two connected immediately, but their budding romance hit a complication when Sean learned that Penny has a criminal record. This discovery made Danny deeply uncomfortable with his son dating a convicted felon, triggering his protective instincts.
Although Danny appeared to accept the situation by the episode’s end, the tension is far from over. Mika Amonsen teased that viewers have not seen the last of Danny’s displeasure. The actor confirmed that Penny will be around for a multi-episode arc, and her relationship with Sean will continue to develop, directly challenging Danny and Sean’s dynamic.
โSheโll be around and her relationship with Sean, it continues to expand. Danny and Seanโs relationship challenges them, but I think it challenges Sean in a way as well,โ Amonsen explained.
He added that Penny forces his character to mature, calling it Sean’s first serious relationship that teaches him about work-life balance.
Danny’s Struggle to Let Go
The core of the conflict stems from Danny’s struggle to see his son as an independent adult. As a detective and a father, his instinct is to protect Sean from potential harm. However, Sean is now at an age where he is making his own decisions.
Amonsen shared that audiences will see pushback from Danny in different ways as the season progresses. Despite his disagreements, Danny’s primary desire is for his son’s happiness. The actor indicated that this situation becomes a significant point of growth for both characters.
โYou eventually see Danny recognize that his son is a full-grown man. Even when there is something that Danny disagrees with, youโre going to see him recognize that he just wants his son to be happy. Thereโs only so much Danny can impose,โ Amonsen stated.
This realization leads to poignant moments, such as Danny ultimately advising Sean, โThen donโt let anyone stop you from going after her, not even me.โ

A Relationship That Expands Both Characters
While the new relationship creates turbulence, it also serves as a catalyst for personal growth. Amonsen described the father-son bond as a “work in progress” that will see better understanding as the season unfolds.
He emphasized that viewers will see Danny Reagan grow as a person alongside his son. Danny’s journey involves learning to step back and respect Sean’s choices, even when he disagrees with them.
โWe see a lot of Danny growing in opposition to Sean also growing. We see Danny really expand as a character,โ Amonsen said.
This character development extends beyond the screen. Amonsen praised his co-star Donnie Wahlberg for his supportive and mentoring role, noting that Wahlberg brought a natural, father-like energy to their off-screen interactions that helped him navigate his role.
