Marvel has officially confirmed that the relationship between Rogue and Magneto will return in the second season of X-Men ‘97. This romance was one of the most talked-about and divisive parts of Season 1. Some viewers liked the pair, while many others felt uncomfortable watching it.

The news came from Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Animation’s head. He spoke with Collider about what is coming in Season 2. Winderbaum shared that Rogue and Magneto are now stuck in the past together, and their romantic story will continue.

Why This Romance Caused So Much Debate in Season 1

The relationship between Rogue and Magneto became a major talking point when the first season aired on Disney+. People had strong feelings about it for several reasons.

The main issue was the age difference and power balance between them. Magneto is much older and served as the team’s leader and mentor. He took over Charles Xavier’s school and fortune. Rogue was shown as a young student at the school. Many viewers said this setup felt wrong because one person had so much more power and life experience than the other.

There was also the matter of Gambit. He loved Rogue deeply. Watching Rogue choose Magneto over Gambit upset many fans. Gambit’s death in Season 1 episode five made everything more painful. He died trying to save Rogue from a nuclear explosion on Genosha.

What the Comics Say About Rogue and Magneto

This pair is not something the show created from nothing. Rogue and Magneto were together in Marvel Comics too. Their comic book history goes back to 1984 during the Secret Wars storyline.

At that time, Rogue had just joined the X-Men. She went to Professor Xavier for help controlling her powers. Magneto was also questioning his own path. They ended up fighting on the same side.

Their relationship grew stronger years later in the Savage Land. Magneto saved Rogue during a fight. They spent a lot of time together there. The most complete version of their romance happened in the Age of Apocalypse timeline. In that world, they married and had a son named Charles.

What Winderbaum Said About Season 2

The Marvel executive did not hold back when talking about what is next for this pair. He explained that the two characters are now trapped in an earlier time period.

Brad Winderbaum stated, “Rogue and Magneto are stuck in the past together. They are kind of our past team… There’s a lot of romance to go around.”

This setup gives them more privacy and time alone. There will be fewer people around to judge their choices. The show appears ready to explore this relationship even more deeply in the coming episodes.

Where the Rest of the Team Ends Up

While Rogue and Magneto are in the past, other X-Men members are scattered across different times. Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey are stuck in the future. Storm and Forge remain in the present.

The team must find their way back to the 1990s. They also have to face Apocalypse, who is the main villain of Season 2. Ross Marquand will voice Apocalypse. He described the new season as very dark with many character deaths.

Gambit’s Shadow Hangs Over Everything

Gambit’s death in Season 1 still affects the story. He gave his life trying to protect Rogue. She felt terrible guilt because she had chosen Magneto over him just before he died.

Now Marvel is bringing back Gambit. He will return as Death, one of Apocalypse’s four horsemen. This sets up a painful situation. Gambit may return and see Rogue with Magneto again. That would make his death in Season 1 feel even more tragic.

When to Watch X-Men ‘97 Season 2

The second season will arrive on Disney+ in Summer 2026. An exact date has not been announced yet. Marvel has already confirmed a third season as well.

A five-issue comic book prelude will release on June 3, 2026. This comic will bridge the gap between Season 1 and Season 2. Writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espin are creating this prequel story.
