Jackie Chan recently shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes story about the first Rush Hour movie. He admitted he had no idea what his co-star Chris Tucker was saying during filming because Tucker spoke too fast.
The action-comedy Rush Hour became a huge hit in 1998. It paired Jackie Chan, a Hong Kong martial arts star, with Chris Tucker, a fast-talking American comedian. The movieโs success led to two sequels.
During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Chan revealed a funny struggle he faced while making the film. He said, “The whole movie, I don’t know what Chris Tucker’s saying. Not a clue.” He explained that Tuckerโs rapid speech made it hard for him to keep up.
Chanโs English wasnโt strong at the time. He relied on a dialect coach to help him understand Tuckerโs lines. “My dialogue coach sits right behind the camera. Every scene, every shot, different dialogue,” he said. Sometimes, he had to ask, “What did he say? He speaks so fast!”
To improve his English, Chan listened to country music. He found the slower lyrics easier to follow. This helped him in later Hollywood roles.
The first Rush Hour was made quickly with a small budget. Chan said, “The first one: little money, little time. We shot it like, โGo, go, go, go!โ” The second film had more resources, and the third had even more. But Chan joked, “Too much money is no good.”
Fans still hope for a fourth Rush Hour movie. Chan confirmed in 2022 that talks were happening. He said, “Weโre talking about part 4 right now.” Chris Tucker also expressed interest, saying he loves working with Chan.
However, time is running out. Chan, now 71, joked, “Hurry up! Otherwise, Chris Tucker and me [will be] 100 years old. Weโll be old men doing Rush Hour.”
The original Rush Hour director, Brett Ratner, is unlikely to return due to past controversies. But fans remain excited about the possibility of another film.
“Lol, Iโd still watch if they were old,” said one fan on social media. Another added, “I think enough time has passed, this will be an amazing movie.”
