The penultimate episode of Invincible Season 4 has arrived, and while viewers agree it delivers exciting action, some are raising eyebrows at several plot choices. Episode 7, titled “Don’t Do Anything Rash,” dropped on Prime Video on April 15, 2026, pushing the Viltrumite War arc toward its season finale. The hour-long episode follows Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun), his father Nolan (J.K. Simmons), and the Coalition of Planets as they launch a direct attack on the Viltrumite homeworld. But for all the spectacle, certain story decisions have left fans scratching their heads.

Three Fan Complaints That Are Getting Attention Online

Shortly after the episode aired, a discussion on Reddit captured the mixed feelings many viewers share. One user posted that they enjoyed the episode but pointed out three specific things they found “dumb.” The post quickly gained traction, with hundreds of fans agreeing and adding their own thoughts.

“Fun episode, but i thought 3 things were dumb: 1. What point did it serve to have them follow spaceracers shot through the planet? 2. Thragg deciding he didnt want to kill invincible because too few viltrumites remained was poorly done, im sure its a comic thing but it made no sense 3. If thragg is THAT powerful, it makes him just standing around all the time so incredibly stupid that its off putting” – Reddit user

The first complaint focuses on the planet-destruction sequence where Mark, Nolan, and Thaedus follow Space Racer‘s laser beam through Viltrum’s core. Some viewers felt the logic behind this plan was unclear. Why did all three need to follow the beam? What purpose did their physical presence serve? For fans expecting tighter storytelling, this moment felt confusing rather than thrilling.

The second issue involves Grand Regent Thragg (voiced by Lee Pace) sparing Mark, Nolan, and Oliver after nearly killing them. Thragg had been built up as an unstoppable force, yet he walks away when victory is within reach. His reasoning? There are too few pure Viltrumites left to waste more lives. While comic readers recognize this beat from the source material, show-only viewers found it hard to accept. After watching Thragg brutally injure Oliver and gut Nolan, his sudden mercy felt unearned and inconsistent.

The third complaint cuts to a larger problem: Thragg‘s inactivity throughout much of the season. Fans have watched the Viltrumite leader stand around while others fought. Now that Episode 7 shows just how powerful he truly is, viewers wonder why he didn’t act sooner. One fan called it “off putting” that such a dominant fighter remained passive for so many episodes.

What Actually Happens in the Episode

Invincible Season 4 Episode 7 picks up immediately after the previous week’s cliffhanger. Thaedus (Peter Cullen) learns that Thragg has called all remaining Viltrumites back to their home planet. The Coalition decides this is their best chance to end the Viltrumite threat once and for all.

The episode opens with a flashback showing Thaedus assassinating Emperor Argall after questioning Viltrum’s brutal methods. Thragg then takes power and orders Viltrumites to fight each other, purging weakness from their society. This new context helps explain why Viltrum’s population dropped so dramatically before the Scourge Virus ever entered the picture.

The present-day battle is massive. The Coalition arrives at Viltrum only to find the Viltrumites hiding in a ring of corpses surrounding the planet. A brutal fight breaks out. Oliver targets Thragg but gets severely injured. Thragg tries to convince Nolan to rejoin the Empire, but Nolan refuses. The turning point comes when Space Racer fires his Infinity Ray toward the planet’s core. Nolan, Mark, and Thaedus follow the beam, punching through the planet and destroying it completely.

Thragg loses everything. His homeworld is gone. He kills Thaedus by decapitating him and nearly kills Nolan and Mark. But at the last moment, he stops. “There are too few left,” he says, sparing their lives because the Viltrumite population cannot afford more losses.

The episode ends with a chilling realization. Mark understands where the surviving Viltrumites are heading. They are coming to Earth. Not as conquerors this time, but as refugees looking to rebuild their dying empire. And back on Earth, Atom Eve is pregnant with Mark‘s child, a secret he does not yet know.

Why Thragg Spares Mark and Nolan

For viewers who have not read the Invincible comics, Thragg‘s decision to spare the Graysons seems illogical. The show has spent an entire season establishing Thragg as the most dangerous Viltrumite alive. He kills without hesitation. He shows no mercy. So why does he let his enemies live?

The answer lies in the episode’s opening flashback and the broader context of Viltrumite society. Thragg was raised from birth to prioritize the Empire above all else. His entire identity is built on preserving the Viltrumite race. When Mark, Nolan, and Thaedus destroy Viltrum, they take away everything Thragg has ever known. But they also kill countless Viltrumites in the process. The Empire is already dying. The Scourge Virus claimed many. Internal purges claimed more. Now the planet itself is gone.

Thragg looks at Nolan and Mark and sees two of the strongest Viltrumites still alive. Killing them would weaken the species further. His mercy is not kindness. It is cold, strategic calculation. The Empire must survive, even if that means letting traitors live another day. This reasoning makes sense within the show’s logic, but the episode could have done a better job making it clear to casual viewers.

Fan Reactions Across Social Media

Despite the complaints, many fans praised Episode 7 as one of the season’s strongest installments. Reddit discussions show a clear divide between viewers who focus on the action and those who pick apart the writing.

“That was the strongest punch in history of the universe. Also Viltrum explosion was greatly improved in the show, that’s where budget went to” – Reddit user

“I loved Thragg’s reaction. The classic ‘villain I am so strong you can’t defeat me’ stance, and then realizing Nolan et al are about to take from him the only thing he cares about” – Reddit user

The animation quality received particular praise. The destruction of Viltrum, the space battle sequences, and the brutal hand-to-hand fights all show significant improvement over earlier episodes this season. The voice acting also stood out, with Lee Pace delivering a performance that makes Thragg feel like more than just a one-dimensional villain.

Some viewers expressed relief that Oliver survived. The episode made it look like Thragg had killed the young Viltrumite, but he appears alive in the final scenes. However, the tension starts to fade when audiences realize no major character actually dies in this episode. Thaedus is gone, but he was always a supporting player. Mark, Nolan, and Oliver all walk away.

How Episode 7 Compares to the Comics

The show makes several changes from the original Invincible comics, and most fans agree these changes improve the story. In the comics, Mark, Nolan, and Thaedus destroy Viltrum using only their own strength. The show uses Space Racer‘s Infinity Ray to make the planet’s destruction more believable. This keeps the power scaling consistent. If three Viltrumites could destroy a planet with their bare hands, every fight would raise questions about why they do not just punch through everything.

The flashback showing Thragg‘s rise to power is also new for the show. The comics touch on this history, but the animated series expands it significantly. Viewers get to see Thragg as a younger warrior, shaped by violence and loss. This extra context makes his present-day choices feel more grounded, even when those choices confuse some fans.

The show also gives more screen time to supporting characters like Battle Beast and Allen the Alien. These moments of camaraderie before the big battle help balance the episode’s darker elements. Zoe and Oliver talking about burgers, Battle Beast casually mentioning he wants “his own blood on the battlefield” – these small beats remind viewers why they care about this world.

The Bigger Picture for the Season Finale

Episode 7 sets up a tense situation for the April 22 finale. The Viltrumites are heading to Earth. Mark is far away, recovering from his injuries. Atom Eve is pregnant and does not know if Mark will return. Debbie and Paul are living together, with Oliver recently praising Paul‘s cooking. The personal stakes have never been higher.

Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, told Variety that keeping Earth-based stories active while Mark fights in space was always important to the creative team.

“You want to keep things as heightened as possible. We’re sending Mark out into space to fight a war. We want to give people the sense that there are still very important things happening on Earth, even if you may not see it. Leaving him with that tidbit, and to be the undercurrent of some unknowns as to what may be occurring, was really important to us.” – Robert Kirkman

Whether the season finale can stick the landing remains to be seen. Episode 7 delivers spectacular action and emotional weight, but the questionable story choices have left some fans nervous. If Thragg continues to hold back or if the heroes survive situations they should not, the show risks losing the tension that makes it special.
