The entertainment world is remembering Joy Harmon, the blonde actress who turned a simple car wash into one of cinema’s most talked-about scenes in the 1967 classic Cool Hand Luke. She passed away at age 87 on April 14, 2026, at her Los Angeles home. While her last name matches several famous faces, many people are asking if she was connected to NCIS star Mark Harmon or comedy writer Dan Harmon. The answer is simple: no, they are not related. The shared last name is just a coincidence.
Her ex-husband, Jeff Gourson, confirmed the news to PEOPLE and TMZ. She died peacefully while in hospice care after battling pneumonia for several weeks. Gourson shared that she was surrounded by her family during her final moments.
“She was a wonderful person, who always loved baking. Even back when she was acting, she’d bake cookies and bring them to set, and later she opened her bakery and went to it every single day. She loved that place. She also loved animals.” – Jeff Gourson
From Pageants to the Big Screen
Joy Patricia Harmon started her career far from the movie set. Born in New York on May 1, 1940, she worked as a child model and was a finalist in the Miss Connecticut pageant. She made her Broadway debut at 18 in the comedy Make a Million.
Her television break came when she appeared on Groucho Marx‘s quiz show You Bet Your Life. Marx liked her so much that he asked her to become his assistant on the follow-up show, Tell It to Groucho.
Throughout the 1960s, Harmon was a familiar face on television. She appeared on popular shows like Bewitched, Batman, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Monkees, and The Odd Couple. She also played a 30-foot giant in the 1965 film Village of the Giants.
The Scene That Made History
Her most famous role came in 1967. In Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman, Harmon played “The Girl” (named Lucille by the prisoners). Her scene lasts only about three minutes and has no dialogue. She washes a car under the hot sun while a chain gang of prisoners watches.
The scene became iconic, though Harmon admitted she did not realize how it would look on screen. She told Entertainment Weekly in 2017:
“I was just washing a car to the best of my ability and having fun with it, with the sponge and everything. My concept of the [scene] was not like what came out. I was not aware that there were two meanings to things that I was doing.”
In an interview with author Tom Lisanti, she recalled that director Stuart Rosenberg was very specific about how she should move. She remembered Paul Newman telling her, “Gosh, you have the bluest eyes!” She added, “I never had any inclination that this would be such a memorable role. After seeing it at the premiere, I was a bit embarrassed.”
A Sweet Second Act as a Baker
Joy Harmon left Hollywood in the 1970s to raise her three children. But she did not retire from working. She turned her love for baking into a full-time business. In 2003, she opened Aunt Joy’s Cakes in Burbank, California.
The bakery became a local favorite. She worked there almost every single day. According to her family, she was working at the bakery the very day before she went to the hospital for her pneumonia treatment.
Her family shared that she spent one to two weeks in the hospital, followed by time in a rehabilitation center. She then returned home to spend her final days in hospice care. A GoFundMe page set up for her medical expenses described her as someone known for her kindness, adding that she would often return money sent by fans out of gratitude.

Harmon is survived by her three children—Jason, Julie, and Jamie—and nine grandchildren. She was married to Jeff Gourson from 1968 until their divorce in 2001.
Fans have shared memories online, remembering her for both that famous film role and the happy life she built later.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “So sorry to hear of the passing of Joy Harmon. She had so many adorable film and TV appearances, but her car washing scene in COOL HAND LUKE played such a huge part in making that movie so iconic. She also founded Aunt Joy’s Bakery in Burbank which she operated until this week.”
Another fan added: “People will always remember Joy Harmon for Cool Hand Luke. But she also had a memorable role in Village of the Giants. #RIPJoyHarmon.”
