The third season of The Capture just finished airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on April 12, 2026. The finale left viewers with more questions than answers. Many fans are now asking if the show will return for another season.
The tech thriller about deepfakes and government manipulation has built a strong following since it first aired in 2019. The season 3 ending showed Rachel Carey (played by Holliday Grainger) taking a powerful position but losing her fight for truth. A final creepy moment showed a dead character appearing in a selfie, then disappearing. This has made fans want more episodes.
BBC Has Not Confirmed Renewal for The Capture Season 4
As of April 2026, the BBC has not officially said yes or no to a fourth season of The Capture. The network has not made any public announcement about the show’s future.
The lack of confirmation means fans must wait. British television networks often take several months after a season ends to decide about renewals. This is normal for shows like The Capture that have complex production needs.
Creator Ben Chanan has given mixed signals about continuing the story. He told Radio Times that he wrote season 3 thinking it might be the last.
“I’d think to myself, as I was writing it, ‘This is going to be the last series.’ Now, is that true? I don’t know. Never say never, right? But I think it’s really healthy to just write each series as if it’s going to be the last, that you’re not just hanging on to people for the sake of it.”
Chanan also told The Independent that “three is a nice number. A trilogy feels nice.” But he added that he does not know what comes next.
Season 3 Finale Raises Many Unanswered Questions
The ending of The Capture season 3 has left viewers confused and wanting answers. In the final episode, Rachel Carey gets promoted to Commander of Counter Terror. But she has to work with the same corrupt system she tried to expose.
A major twist shows Gemma Garland (played by Lia Williams) getting shot dead by Noah Pierson ( Killian Scott) during a public inquiry. Rachel then kills Pierson. But later, when Rachel takes a selfie with her sister Abigail, Garland appears in the background outside a window. When Rachel looks again, the figure is gone.
Fans reacted strongly on social media. One viewer posted on X:
“There needs to be a fourth series of The Capture. It is sooo good. S3E6 was superb and left us wanting another series. Soon.”
Another fan asked: “Is Gemma dead? I don’t trust these scriptwriters anymore. We need answers!!! We need S4!!”
Other viewers expressed confusion about the ending. One wrote: “What on earth was that ending meant to mean? Are they hacking her brain now?”
Creator Says There Is More Technology to Write About
Ben Chanan has said that new technology gives him plenty of material for more episodes. He told The Guardian:
“There’s no shortage of terrifying technology to write about, that’s for sure.”
The show has always focused on deepfakes, AI manipulation, and fake news. These topics keep changing as real-world technology advances. Chanan explained in 2023 that he sometimes needs to wait and see where technology goes before writing new stories.
“I think we went quite far with The Capture in terms of what could happen next,” he said. “I almost feel sometimes like I need to take a minute and wait for the news to catch up.”
This approach explains the gaps between seasons. Season 1 came out in 2019, season 2 in 2022, and season 3 in 2026. Each gap lasted three to four years.
Cast Members Also Want to Know More
Holliday Grainger, who plays Rachel Carey, has talked about questions she wants answered. She told Cosmopolitan UK that she wants to know more about the AI character Simon.
“I mean, if I was Carey, I’d want to know, in order to trust Simon, who programmed Simon? Who’s behind that?”
This question could drive an entire new season. Exploring Simon’s origins could reveal bigger secrets than the E Squadron storyline.
Ron Perlman, who played Frank Napier, died in season 3. Chanan said he wrote that death thinking it might be the final season. “I think actors don’t mind dying in a series, particularly if it’s probably going to be the last one,” he told Radio Times.
What a Potential Season 4 Could Cover
If The Capture season 4 happens, several storylines could continue. Rachel Carey now holds power but has lost her moral ground. She has become part of the system she hated. A new season could show her either fighting back or sinking deeper into corruption.
The E Squadron still controls the Correction programme. No one has stopped them. The AI called Simon remains a mystery. Who created it? What are its real goals?
The final shot of Gemma Garland also needs explanation. Was Rachel seeing things? Was it a new type of manipulation? Or did Garland somehow survive?
These open questions give the writers many directions to take the story.

Fans Keep Demanding More Episodes
Social media has been full of fans asking for The Capture season 4. During season 3’s weekly release schedule, many viewers wanted the BBC to drop all episodes at once.
One fan tweeted at BBC One and BBC iPlayer: “I am politely asking you to release the remaining episodes of The Capture onto iPlayer. The suspense is killing me! I need to binge watch it! Urgently!”
After the finale, the demand shifted to wanting another full season. Many viewers said the show is too good to end.
