Disney Channel fans rejoice! The beloved series Wizards of Waverly Place is officially getting a revival titled “Wizards,” which is set to premiere this fall on both Disney Channel and Disney+.
Selena Gomez, who stole hearts as Alex Russo in the original show, expressed her excitement about the upcoming sequel.
“WE ARE BACK!! SOOOO GRATEFUL [two hearts emoji] MAGIC🪄🪄,” Gomez wrote in the comments section of a Disney Channel Instagram post announcing the revival.
The announcement was accompanied by a photo featuring a younger Gomez and David Henrie, her co-star who played Justin Russo, sitting on a couch. A new picture mirroring the pose with a grown-up Gomez and Henrie was included next to it, hinting at the show’s continuation.
Henrie, 34, also shared his enthusiasm on his Instagram Story, writing, “Can’t wait!!! See you this Fall! [two hands together emoji].”
About the Sequel Series “Wizards”
According to Deadline, the new series will see the return of Gomez and Henrie, but with a twist. While Henrie will reprise his role as Justin Russo in a regular capacity, Gomez will appear as a guest star for the first season.
New faces will be joining the cast, including Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, Max Matenko, and Mimi Gianopulos.
The original Wizards of Waverly Place, which aired from 2007 to 2012, centered on a family with a secret – they were wizards! Deadline reports that the upcoming sequel will focus on Justin, who has chosen to live a normal life without magic. However, his peaceful existence is disrupted when his sister Alex (played by Gomez) arrives with a young wizard named Billie (played by Brown) who needs Justin’s help with her magical training.
What to Expect
The series is being written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, the minds behind the successful Disney Channel revival Raven’s Home. Production for the new series is scheduled to begin in April.
News of the sequel comes after months of speculation. In January, Disney began hinting at a potential reboot with a close-up image of a Wizards pilot script with a toy wand on the official Disney Channel Instagram account.
Later that month, Henrie shared a photo on his Instagram Story featuring himself, Gomez, the new writers, and the new cast, further fueling rumors of a revival.
With the official announcement and a premiere date set for fall, fans can gear up for a fresh take on the Russo family’s magical adventures.
