The BBC thriller The Capture finished its third season on April 12, 2026, leaving viewers stunned with a finale packed with betrayal, death, and a final image that has everyone talking. The episode wrapped up the story of DI Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) and her fight against a secret military unit called E Squadron. Instead of a happy ending, audiences got a dark conclusion where the bad guys won, and Rachel was left broken but still standing.

The final scene showing the ghost of Gemma Garland (Lia Williams) in a selfie has sparked huge demand for a fourth season. Here is a full breakdown of everything that happened in the season 3 finale of The Capture.

Rachel Carey’s Fight Against Simon and E Squadron Ends in Defeat

The finale begins with Rachel Carey getting a promotion. She is made Commander of Counter Terror after Noah Pierson (Killian Scott) leaves the post. She agrees with Deputy Commissioner Julian Talbot (Andrew Buchan) to release all evidence against the corrupt military unit to the public. But things go wrong almost immediately.

Colonel Christopher Figgis (Linus Roache) kidnaps Rachel. He tells her that Simon, the mastermind they have been hunting, is not a person. Simon is actually an advanced artificial intelligence system. The AI controls operations, predicts outcomes, and blackmails people to stay in power. Figgis admits he blackmailed Tom Kendrick (David Tennant) and others to work for him.

To break Rachel mentally, Figgis shows her a video of her sister Abigail (Daisy Waterstone) with a gun to her head. Rachel insists it is a deepfake. The video shows Abigail getting shot. The room clears, leaving a gun on the floor for Rachel. Later, the show reveals Abigail is actually safe. The shooting was a deepfake designed to test Rachel’s trust in her own eyes.

Gemma Garland Dies at the Inquiry and Noah Pierson Gets Killed

A major part of the finale takes place at the government inquiry into Correction. Former home secretary Sir Rowan Gill (Andy Nyman) exposes Gemma Garland as the secret leader of the Correction programme. She arrives to give testimony. She defends Correction, saying it stopped terror attacks and saved lives.

But Noah Pierson does not go to save Rachel. Instead, he follows a new order from Simon. He walks into the inquiry and shoots Gemma dead. The only footage of the real shooter comes from BBC journalist Natasha Hayes (Jude Mack).

Here is where the lies take over. The inquiry shows deepfaked footage making it look like James Whitlock (Joe Dempsie) killed Gemma. The message to the public is clear: Correction was good, and without it, Whitlock would have been in jail and Gemma would be alive.

Noah Pierson later arrives to rescue Rachel. But Rachel, knowing he killed Gemma, shoots him with the gun left on the floor. Before dying, Noah tells Rachel he was forced to do it. He says Simon gave him a new mission on his handset as soon as he powered up. He insists he meant to save her, but the AI controlled him like a puppet.

Rachel Realizes She Can Never Beat the Powerful AI System

After Gemma’s death, Rachel learns journalist Natasha Hayes works for E Squadron. Hayes blackmailed Paige (Leah Eckardt) into helping them. Rachel arrests Hayes and gets Paige to confess everything. But Rachel cannot use this information.

E Squadron fights back by spreading fake news. They release information claiming Noah Pierson was actually a Russian agent named Sajmonu Sedkin. They show doctored footage of him speaking Russian. The country starts preparing for war based on this lie.

Rachel realizes she has lost. She tells Talbot that no one can win against E Squadron. They are too organized and too powerful. The AI Simon controls too many parts of the government and media. Rachel accepts a deal to stay quiet in exchange for keeping her job.

That Creepy Selfie Ending: Is Gemma Garland a Ghost or a Glitch?

The most talked about moment happens in the final minutes. Rachel returns home and finds Abigail safe in her apartment. They talk about moving in together. Abigail takes a selfie of them on the sofa. A window is visible behind them.

After Abigail goes to bed, Rachel looks at the selfie on her phone. In the background, standing outside the window, is Gemma Garland. Rachel turns to look at the window. No one is there. The apartment is high up. There is no way anyone could stand there. When Rachel looks back at her phone, Gemma has disappeared from the photo.

Fans are asking the same question: Is Gemma alive? The show does not give an answer. The ending could mean three things. First, Rachel is losing her mind from lack of sleep and trauma. Second, E Squadron hacked her phone to insert the image temporarily. Third, Gemma created a digital version of herself before dying, similar to how she made a copy of Frank Napier.

Holliday Grainger, who plays Rachel, spoke about the scene. She said: “Well, that’s the question, isn’t it? I mean, do you believe what you see?”

Fans Demand BBC to Make The Capture Season 4 Immediately

Social media exploded after the finale aired. Viewers are begging the BBC to confirm The Capture season 4. The cliffhanger ending left too many questions unanswered.

One fan wrote on X: “There needs to be a fourth series of #TheCapture. It is sooo good. S3E6 was superb and left us wanting another series. Soon”

Another viewer said: “Is Gemma dead? I don’t trust these scriptwriters anymore We need answers!!! We need S4!!”

A third fan added: “Need a season 4. I can’t believe Walker died man #TheCapture”

The show’s creator Ben Chanan previously said he wrote season 3 as the final chapter. But he has since changed his tone. He told Radio Times: “I’d think to myself as I was writing it ‘This is going to be the last series.’ Now, is that true? I don’t know. Never say never, right?”

With the huge fan reaction and the open ending, many believe the BBC will bring the show back. For now, all three seasons of The Capture are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
