The new DC movie Supergirl has arrived in theaters, and the ending is already sparking major conversations among fans. The film shows Kara Zor-El making a choice that clearly separates her from her famous cousin, Superman. While the Man of Steel follows a strict no-killing rule, Kara takes a much darker path in the final moments, proving that these two Kryptonian heroes operate with very different moral codes.

The movie, directed by Craig Gillespie, stars Milly Alcock as the titular hero. It is based on the popular comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. However, the film makes a major change to the source material that has caught many viewers off guard. This change highlights the deep trauma and internal conflict that define this version of Kara Zor-El, making her a much more complex character than her cousin.

Supergirl Chooses Vengeance in a Shocking Final Scene

The climax of Supergirl sees Kara finally catching up with the space pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts. Krem is responsible for killing the family of a young girl named Ruthye and also poisoning Kara’s beloved dog, Krypto. Ruthye wants revenge and is ready to kill Krem herself.

Kara steps in and convinces Ruthye not to go through with it. She tells the young girl that taking a life would leave a permanent mark on her soul. Ruthye listens and walks away.

However, the movie takes a dark turn as soon as Ruthye is out of sight. Kara picks up Ruthye’s sword and stabs Krem multiple times, killing him. She does this to avenge Ruthye’s family and Krem’s attack on Krypto. This moment is a complete shock because it goes against the traditional superhero code that fans expect from the Super-family.

In the original comic book, Kara does not kill Krem. Instead, she traps him in the Phantom Zone for 300 years. The movie’s decision to have Kara kill him shows that this version of the character is much more willing to use lethal force.

Kara’s Traumatic Past Shapes Her Morality

The movie explains why Kara is so different from Superman. Clark Kent was sent to Earth as a baby and was raised by the loving Kent family in Smallville. He grew up with human values and a positive outlook on life.

Kara’s story is much more painful. She grew up on Krypton and saw her entire planet destroyed. She lived on Argo City, the only surviving part of Krypton, where people died slowly from Kryptonite poisoning. She lost everyone she loved. This trauma has left her angry and cynical.

“He sees the good in everyone; I see the truth.” – Kara Zor-El in Supergirl

This line from the movie sums up the difference between the two cousins. Superman believes in redemption and second chances. Kara has seen too much evil in the universe to have that same hope. Her moral compass is still developing, and she is more willing to take justice into her own hands. Her decision to kill Krem was not just about revenge for Ruthye. It was also personal because Krem hurt Krypto, who is her only remaining link to her lost homeworld.

The Ending Sets Up Kara’s Future in the DCU

The shocking ending of Supergirl is not just a moment of violence. It is a statement about who Kara Zor-El is and will be in the DC Universe. She is not a copy of Superman. She is a hero who has seen the worst the galaxy has to offer and is not afraid to make hard decisions.

The movie ends with Kara returning to Earth with a healed Krypto. She reunites with Superman and tells him she plans to stay for a while. This sets up her appearance in the upcoming DC movie Man of Tomorrow, which will be a sequel to James Gunn’s Superman.

This decision to have Kara kill Krem also gives the DCU a new kind of hero. While Superman will always try to find another way, Supergirl is willing to do what she feels is necessary to protect the innocent. This creates a fascinating dynamic for future team-ups and stories.
