The second episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 delivered one of the most brutal and emotionally charged hours of television this year. Titled “Rhaenyra the Cruel,” the episode wasted no time showing the devastating cost of the Targaryen civil war. Following the shocking death of Prince Jacaerys in the season premiere, this episode focused on grief, revenge, and the bloody capture of King’s Landing.

The episode aired on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and is available for streaming on Max. The episode was written by Sara Hess and directed by Clare Kilner.

The Aftermath of the Battle of the Gullet

The episode opens with a haunting image: the lifeless body of Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett) drifting in the water. The Battle of the Gullet, which was the centerpiece of the Season 3 premiere, has been won by Team Black. However, the victory feels hollow.

Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia) finds Jace’s body and brings it back to Dragonstone. She announces the victory to the guards, but her voice is empty. The joy of winning the battle is gone, replaced by the weight of Jace’s death.

When Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) sees her son’s body, she completely breaks down. She falls to her knees and screams at him, asking, “What have you done?” She shakes his body as if she can wake him up. It is a devastating moment that shows a mother’s grief. Rhaenyra then turns her anger on the guards who allowed Jace to lock her in her chambers and join the battle. When one guard offers his life to atone for the mistake, she asks, “Will it wake my son?”

Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) survives the battle. He is found washed up on the rocks by his family. Looking at the destruction, he says, “If this be victory, I hope I never see another.”

Rhaena’s Mistake Becomes a Burden

Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell) is also dealing with the fallout of the battle. She was the one riding the wild dragon, Sheepstealer, during the battle. Her inability to control the dragon caused Jace to try to help her, leading to his death.

Rhaena rides to the Eyrie to beg Lady Jeyne Arryn (Amanda Collin) for protection. She admits, “I have done a terrible thing.” Lady Jeyne already knows what happened and refuses to help Rhaena. She wants nothing to do with her. Rhaena says she will let Sheepstealer stay near the Vale in exchange for protection, but Jeyne says she cannot control where a dragon stays. Rhaena is now a fugitive.

Daemon Returns to Rhaenyra

Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) is celebrating a victory of his own in the Riverlands when he receives news of Jace’s death. He returns to Dragonstone immediately. When he finds Rhaenyra in bed, overcome with grief, he tells her they cannot let Jace and Luke die in vain. He tells her about the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy and the vision he saw at Harrenhal. This finally helps Rhaenyra find the strength to keep fighting. She decides to take King’s Landing while Aemond and Vhagar are away.

Alicent Prepares for Rhaenyra’s Arrival

In King’s Landing, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) is preparing for Rhaenyra’s arrival. She plans to let Rhaenyra take the throne peacefully to end the war and save her family. She asks the City Watch to stand down when Rhaenyra arrives. The Captain of the City Watch, Ser Luthor, calls it treason, but Alicent says, “The question is, would you?”

Alicent also faces a scary attack. Lord Jasper Wylde corners her, and he tries to force himself on her. She fights back, smashing a stone into his face. Grand Maester Orwyle arrives and arrests Jasper. Orwyle tells Alicent, “I fear it is something desperate.”

Aemond’s Reckless Attack at Harrenhal

Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) left King’s Landing on Vhagar to attack Harrenhal. However, the episode shows him in a bad situation. He is badly hurt after a fight at Harrenhal. He collapses at the feet of Alys Rivers after being stabbed. His fate is left uncertain, but it seems he is seriously wounded.

Rhaenyra Takes the Iron Throne

Rhaenyra flies to King’s Landing with Daemon, Hugh Hammer, and Ulf White. When they arrive, most of the City Watch stands down. Daemon leads Rhaenyra into the Throne Room.

Rhaenyra refuses to sit on the throne until Aegon is dead. However, Aegon has already fled the city with Larys Strong. Daemon then reveals a “gift” Larys left for him in the dungeons: Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). Otto has been a prisoner of Larys Strong ever since he left King’s Landing in Season 2.

Daemon pushes Rhaenyra to kill Otto herself. He says, “This is the moment you become queen.” Rhaenyra hesitates. She remembers Otto as her father’s best friend. But she takes Daemon’s sword, Dark Sister, and swings it at Otto’s neck. The first swing is not clean. She has to swing again to remove his head.

After killing Otto and Jasper Wylde, Rhaenyra finally sits on the Iron Throne. However, her victory is cut short. Alicent and Helaena are brought into the throne room. They tried to flee the city but were caught. Alicent walks toward the throne and sees her father’s dead body on the floor. The episode ends with a wordless stare between Alicent and Rhaenyra.

House of the Dragon Season 3 continues to deliver high drama and shocking deaths. New episodes are available every Sunday on HBO and Max.
