The new Spider-Man movie has confirmed the identity of Mary Jane’s new boyfriend. Spider-Man: Brand New Day features a character named Paul, a name that carries a lot of weight for comic book fans.
This Paul is a direct reference to Paul Rabin, a character from the Marvel comics who is considered one of the most hated characters in the franchise’s history. The movie is now playing in theaters worldwide.
Who Is Paul?
In the comics, Paul Rabin was introduced in 2022’s Amazing Spider-Man #1. The story began after a time jump. Peter Parker found that Mary Jane Watson had moved on and was now married to a man named Paul, and they had two children.
Fans immediately disliked Paul. He wasn’t a villain who did anything evil. Instead, he was seen as a boring character who existed only to keep Peter and MJ apart. He became the symbol of everything frustrating about the Spider-Man comics at that time.
The Movie Connection
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, actor Eman Esfandi (known from Ahsoka) plays MJ’s new boyfriend. The character is only credited as “The Boyfriend” and appears in a single scene.
However, fans who watched subtitled screenings noticed something important. The subtitles name the character as Paul. This confirms the movie is referencing the controversial comic book character.
Why Fans Hate Paul
The hatred for Paul comes from a long history. In 2007, Marvel published the storyline “One More Day,” which erased Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s marriage. Many fans have never accepted this change.
Paul represented a barrier between Peter and MJ. He was the person MJ chose instead of Peter. Even though Paul later died in the comics during the “Death Spiral” storyline, the anger from fans never went away.
What the Cast Says
Jacob Batalon, who plays Ned Leeds, spoke about Esfandi’s character. He told The Hollywood Reporter that stepping in as the new boyfriend was a big task.
“People genuinely sense the awkward tension when they see MJ’s new boyfriend because they know it feels wrong,” Batalon said.
Batalon added that he didn’t even know the character’s name in the movie, joking that it could be “Nate Dawg”.
