A Bollywood film shoot at an English cricket ground has become an unexpected factor in a sporting controversy that has pushed Leicestershire County Cricket Club to the brink of relegation from the County Championship Division One. The club was handed a 27-point penalty and fined £5,000 for preparing a poor pitch during their match against Glamorgan in August 2026. Leicestershire’s head groundsman, Callum Lewin, cited an unscheduled Bollywood filming event for the upcoming Sourav Ganguly biopic Dada as one of the reasons he could not prepare the pitch properly. The Cricket Discipline Panel rejected that argument, and the penalty has left the club fighting to avoid an immediate return to Division Two.
The Pitch That Sparked a Cricket Controversy
The trouble began during Leicestershire’s home fixture against Glamorgan at Uptonsteel Grace Road, played from August 20 to 23, 2026. Leicestershire won the match by 42 runs, a result that initially earned them 19 points and boosted their hopes of surviving in the top division.
Match referee Ian Ramage recorded 43 examples of uneven bounce in his match log. The Cricket Regulator later rated the Grace Road pitch as “poor,” identifying moving cracks and localised collapses at the junctions of those cracks as the key problems.
The Cricket Discipline Panel upheld the charge against Leicestershire for breaching the ECB’s Pitch Regulations. The penalty stripped Leicestershire of all 19 points earned from the Glamorgan win and added an eight-point deduction, plus the £5,000 fine. A further eight-point deduction was suspended until the end of the 2027 season.
How a Bollywood Shoot Entered the Cricket Pitch Debate
Grace Road was used as a filming location for Dada: The Sourav Ganguly Story, a biopic starring Rajkummar Rao as the former India captain. The shoot took place just four days before the Glamorgan match began.
Groundsman Callum Lewin told the Cricket Regulator that the filming prevented him from working on the pitch. “There was a lot of circumstances leading up to the game that were just out of my control, such as the weather being 35 degrees and we had an unscheduled Bollywood filming event four days before, and I wasn’t allowed to work on the pitch. I wasn’t allowed to cover it or anything,” Lewin said.
Lewin also noted that the pitch had already been used for two T20 matches about ten weeks earlier, leaving the surface drier and more prone to cracking.
The Cricket Discipline Panel, however, dismissed the film shoot as a mitigating factor. The panel noted that filming at Grace Road lasted only one day, despite the groundsman’s claim that it disrupted his preparation window. The tribunal concluded that the defects in the pitch were “foreseeable consequences of the preparation employed” and should have been mitigated by the grounds team.
The 27-Point Penalty That Shook Leicestershire
The full penalty was confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on September 16, 2026. In total, Leicestershire lost 27 points: the 19 points from the Glamorgan victory plus an eight-point sanction from the Cricket Discipline Panel. The club also received a £5,000 fine and a further eight-point deduction suspended for a year.
The penalty dropped Leicestershire to the bottom of the 10-team Division One table. At the time of the sanction, the club had 89 points from 12 matches, leaving them 38 points adrift of the last safe spot.
Leicestershire issued a statement saying the club “notes the Cricket Discipline Panel’s decision” and was “reviewing its position and considering all available options”. The club had 10 working days from the decision to appeal.
Leicestershire’s Battle to Stay in Division One
The points deduction turned Leicestershire’s penultimate match of the season against Hampshire into a relegation decider. Both teams were fighting to avoid the bottom two places.
Leicestershire won the match by five wickets on September 18, 2026, with Nick Kelly scoring 86 and Ben Cox finishing 75 not out. The pair shared a 158-run fifth-wicket partnership to chase down the target of 334.
The result confirmed Hampshire’s relegation to Division Two for the first time since 2014. Leicestershire, however, retained only a mathematical chance of survival. To avoid relegation, they needed to beat Warwickshire in their final match and take 20 more points than Essex picked up from their concluding fixture.

Rajkummar Rao plays the lead role of Sourav Ganguly. The cast also includes Tanya Maniktala as Dona Ganguly, Saswata Chatterjee as Chandi Ganguly, Aparajita Adhya as Ganguly’s mother, and Rahul Dev Bose as his brother Snehasish Ganguly.
The first-look poster was released on July 8, 2026, to mark Ganguly’s 54th birthday. It recreates Ganguly’s iconic shirt-waving celebration from the Lord’s balcony after India’s 2002 NatWest Series final victory over England.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on May 14, 2027.
Production Team Responds to the Controversy
Luv Films, the production company behind Dada, responded to the reports linking the film shoot to Leicestershire’s penalty. “We would like to clarify that the shoot was duly planned and carried out with all requisite permissions and protocols in place. We are not aware of any incident or issue arising in relation to the shoot,” the production house told Sports Now.
The statement came after the Cricket Discipline Panel’s decision drew widespread attention to the unusual intersection of a Bollywood production and an English county cricket disciplinary case.
