Lala Dominguez’s future in NCIS: Origins has already been decided, even as her romance with a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs finally heats up. Showrunner David J. North has confirmed that Lala’s ultimate fate is locked in, while the Season 3 trailer shows Gibbs and Lala kissing and carrying on a secret relationship. The prequel returns on October 6, 2026, with Mark Harmon appearing in all 10 episodes as the older Gibbs.
Showrunner Confirms Lala’s Fate Is Already Decided
David J. North knows exactly how Lala Dominguez’s story ends. The NCIS: Origins showrunner sat down with Diona Reasonover and Brian Dietzen for their podcast NCIS: Partners & Probies and addressed the biggest question hanging over the prequel: why has Gibbs never mentioned Lala in the main NCIS series?
North wouldn’t reveal whether Lala lives or dies, but he made one thing clear. He knows her fate, and it has been decided. Reasonover even suggested he write it down and slip it to her so she’d have the spoilers, but the conversation stopped there.
The question matters because NCIS fans know Gibbs’ romantic history from the flagship show. He married Diane Sterling, then later married and divorced Tobias Fornell’s ex-wife, and was engaged to another woman. Lala was never part of that picture. She was never mentioned once.
Yet the two-part Origins premiere ended with Mark Harmon’s older Gibbs narrating that the story he’s telling is “about her.” That “her” turned out to be Lala, which makes her absence from Gibbs’ later life even more puzzling.
Gibbs And Lala Finally Kiss In Season 2 Finale
The wait for Gibbs and Lala to act on their feelings ended in the NCIS: Origins Season 2 finale, titled “Hollywood Ending.” After two seasons of romantic tension, Austin Stowell’s younger Gibbs and Mariel Molino’s Lala finally kissed.
It was a moment that had been building since the show premiered in October 2024. The two nearly kissed in the Season 1 finale before Lala was seriously injured in a car crash. She survived, but the aftermath kept them apart. Gibbs started dating Diane, and Lala briefly considered a new life with Manny Santiago before that relationship ended.
The Season 2 finale changed everything. As TheWrap reported, the threat of losing Lala finally pushed Gibbs to fight for her, sealing the episode with a big kiss that kept her on the team.
Lala’s Season 2 Fate Was Worse Than Death For Gibbs
Lala survived the car crash that ended Season 1, but her recovery came at a cost. She suffered a traumatic brain injury, a collapsed lung, and had her left thigh muscle crushed during a four-month recovery period.
Showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal explained that nearly losing Lala is what led Gibbs to pursue Diane in the first place. Diane felt like a safer option to him. He couldn’t handle almost losing Lala after getting so close to her, and he didn’t want his heart broken again.
“It’s tough that Lala and Gibbs got really close, then Lala nearly dies, and he can’t handle that. And so he chooses this safer option [Diane] to avoid having his heart completely broken again.”
North described Diane as “a welcome distraction” for Gibbs, but hinted that she would become more than that as Season 2 progressed.
Season 3 Trailer Shows Secret Romance In Full Swing
The official trailer for NCIS: Origins Season 3 shows at least three intimate scenes between Gibbs and Lala. The agents are seen kissing and meeting up both at NCIS and outside office hours to carry on their romance quietly.
The trailer also gives a look at the aftermath of that kiss. TV Insider described a scene where “Gibbs’ shirt is missing buttons,” making it clear the relationship has moved beyond just a single kiss.
In the 1992 timeline, the team races to rescue a kidnapped Randy (played by Caleb Foote) while Gibbs and Lala deal with the aftermath of their kiss.
Mark Harmon Returns For All 10 Episodes
Mark Harmon is back in a big way. The actor who originated the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs will appear in all 10 episodes of Season 3, his most significant return to the franchise since leaving the flagship series in NCIS Season 19.
His return is tied to a mystery connecting Gibbs’ past to his present. The present-day storyline will see “ghosts from Gibbs’ past” disrupt his retirement in Alaska, forcing him back to the Washington D.C. NCIS office. He’ll also reunite with Bobby Moynihan’s Woody Browne, a forensic scientist from his Origins days.
Harmon teased what’s ahead for the character:
“Some of that obviously will be defined in the storyline. [The way Gibbs] was written, [there was] so much you didn’t know about. There was a lot of darkness in that character.”

NCIS: Origins Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. New episodes will air weekly on Tuesdays. The show will also stream on Paramount+ for viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions where the platform is available.
