A lavish party at a grand English estate sets the stage for a puzzling death that nobody believes was an accident. Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent finds her friend Gerry Wade dead in his bed after a night of celebration, with seven alarm clocks neatly lined up on the mantelpiece. The authorities call it a tragic misadventure, but Bundle is convinced it was murder and vows to find the truth herself. This is the gripping start to Netflix’s new adaptation, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, which began streaming on January 15, 2026.

A Party at Chimneys and a Fatal Morning

The episode, titled “Bundle of Love,” opens not at the party, but five years earlier in 1920 in Ronda, Spain. A man is lured into a bullring, where he is killed. The story then shifts to 1925 at Chimneys, the country home of Bundle and her mother, Lady Caterham. To manage financial troubles, Lady Caterham has rented the house to Sir Oswald and Lady Coote, wealthy industrialists who are hosting a grand party.

The guest list is a mix of aristocracy and government officials from the Foreign Office. Among them is the charming Gerry Wade, a close family friend who served in the Great War with Bundle’s late brother. Bundle and Gerry share a clear romantic spark, and he hints at plans to propose to her. Also present are Gerry’s colleagues, including Ronny Devereux and Bill Eversleigh. As a joke on Gerry, who is known for sleeping heavily, Ronny and Bill hide eight alarm clocks in his bedroom, all set to ring in the morning.

The next morning, the clocks ring, but Gerry does not wake up. Bundle goes to check on him and makes a terrible discovery.

“She finds him cold and unmoving โ€” heโ€™s dead.”

A doctor and a detective arrive. On Gerry’s bedside table is an empty bottle of a powerful sleeping draft. The official theory is that Gerry accidentallyโ€”or perhaps purposelyโ€”mixed the draft with alcohol, leading to a fatal overdose. The death is soon ruled as “misadventure”. Bundle, however, refuses to accept this. She knows Gerry was a famously deep sleeper who could sleep through artillery fire and, more importantly, he had just made future plans with her. She believes he was murdered.

Bundle Begins Her Investigation

Motivated by loyalty to Gerry and her own sharp instincts, Bundle starts looking for clues everyone else has missed. Her search reveals strange inconsistencies.

First, she finds a broken alarm clock in the garden. When she asks Ronny about it, he confirms that he and Bill planted eight clocks, but they were hidden around the roomโ€”not placed on the mantel. Yet, when Gerry was found, only seven clocks were lined up neatly on the mantelpiece. The eighth clock is missing. Someone had been in the room after the prank was set, rearranging the scene.

Second, Bundle discovers a half-written letter from Gerry to his sister, Lorraine. In it, he apologizes for mentioning something called the “Seven Dials” to her and urges her to forget about it. Bundle’s mother explains that Seven Dials is a less-than-reputable district in London, but the warning in the letter suggests it means something more.

Third, Bundle learns about the sleeping draft. The maid, Emily, reveals that Lady Coote gave her the bottle to help her sleep but that it went missing from her room on the night of the party. She doesn’t know how it ended up with Gerry. Bundle later confronts Lady Coote at the inquest, but the wealthy socialite dismisses her questions and tells her to leave the past alone.

A Mysterious Stranger and a Second Death

Feeling she is being watched, Bundle notices a mysterious man with a moustache observing her. She follows him and, through quick thinking at a phone booth, learns he made a call to Scotland Yard. This man is later identified as Superintendent Battle, a detective who takes an interest in the case.

Determined to find answers, Bundle decides to drive to London to investigate further. As she is leaving, her mother remarks that she is just like her late father. A photograph reveals that her father was the man killed in the bullring in the episode’s opening scene, connecting the past tragedy to the present mystery.

Shortly after Bundle leaves, a threatening anonymous note arrives at Chimneys addressed to her, warning her to stay away from Seven Dials. The danger becomes violently real moments later. While driving, Bundle sees a body lying in the road.

“Itโ€™s none other than Ronny, who is bleeding out from a gunshot wound.”

Her friend and ally, who was helping her investigate, has been shot. With his last breath, Ronny gives Bundle a urgent message: “Tell Jimmyโ€ฆ Seven Dials.”. He then dies in her arms, leaving Bundle with two murders to solve and a cryptic final clue.

The Key Players and Their Secrets

The first episode introduces a large cast of characters, each with possible motives tied to class, money, and secret loyalties.

  • Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent (Mia McKenna-Bruce): The tenacious young aristocrat who turns amateur detective. Her performance is noted for bringing a spirited, modern energy to the 1920s setting.
  • Gerry Wade (Corey Mylchreest): The charming victim. His chemistry with Bundle makes his death a personal loss that drives the entire investigation.
  • Lady Caterham (Helena Bonham Carter): Bundle’s mother, a widow struggling with grief and financial strain after losing her husband and son.
  • Superintendent Battle (Martin Freeman): The Scotland Yard detective who appears to be following the caseโ€”and Bundle.
  • Ronny Devereux (Nabhaan Rizwan) and Bill Eversleigh (Hughie O’Donnell): Gerry’s Foreign Office friends who played the clock prank.
  • Jimmy Thesiger (Edward Bluemel): Another friend and party guest, who becomes central to Ronny’s dying message.
  • The Cootes: The new-money industrialists renting Chimneys. Their rude behavior and Lady Coote’s missing sleeping draft put them under early suspicion.

With one friend dead from poison and another murdered on a roadside, Bundle’s quest for the truth is only beginning. The secrets of the Seven Dials, the missing clock, and the connection to her father’s death are all threads she must follow into even greater danger.
