The latest episode of Tell Me Lies delivered one of the show’s most intense and emotionally charged installments yet. Season 3, Episode 7, titled “As I Climb Onto Your Back, I Will Promise Not to Sting,” pushed Lucy Albright to her breaking point while simultaneously exploding the fragile peace within her friend group. Relationships were tested, dark secrets bubbled to the surface, and Lucy’s psychological state became a central focus as the consequences of Stephen’s manipulation reached a devastating peak.

Breaking Down Lucy’s Mental and Emotional Fragility

Throughout Season 3, viewers have watched Lucy struggle under the immense pressure of Stephen’s blackmail. This stress has taken a severe psychological toll, reaching a crisis point in Episode 7. The never-ending anxiety of waiting for Stephen to expose the incriminating tape she recorded in Episode 3 has become unbearable for her. Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer has explained that Lucy is a character who has “always had struggles with her mental health” since her father’s death, lacking the tools to deal with the trauma she faces. This season, the external pressure from Stephen has caused a fracture where she “starts to disassociate,” a defense mechanism against a reality she cannot handle.

Her desperation became fully visible when a tearful Lucy begged Stephen at his door. “I GIVE UP!” she screamed. She pleaded to just watch the tape and get the torment over with, telling him, “I can’t do this anymore. I really can’t. The waiting. The not knowing when you’re gonna do it. I need this part to be over”. In a surprising move, Stephen gave her the tape back and claimed he hadn’t made another copy. However, this act of apparent mercy was not driven by empathy.

“My answer is very cynical,” Oppenheimer told Decider. “I think he’s just so disgusted by seeing her like this and seeing her grovel that it’s no longer fun”.

Jackson White, who plays Stephen, echoed this sentiment, explaining his character’s pattern: “When he wins the game he doesn’t have any fun anymore”. Lucy was no longer a challenging opponent; she had surrendered completely, robbing him of his sick satisfaction.

The Troubling Memory Lapses and What They Mean

Even after retrieving the tape, Lucy’s problems are far from over. A key moment at the end of the episode revealed the true extent of her mental strain. Lucy ran into Tegan and urgently warned her to stay away from Stephen, calling him dangerous. Tegan’s chilling response was, “You already told me all of this yesterday”. Lucy had no memory of the prior conversation, mirroring an earlier incident this season where she did not remember walking to Stephen’s room. These memory lapses are a physical manifestation of the extreme stress, described by Lucy herself as feeling like a “never-ending psychotic break”. This dissociation raises serious questions about her reliability and what else she may have forgotten or what could still happen with the tape.

Bree’s Devastating Night and the Unraveling of Secrets

While Lucy spiraled, Bree’s long-awaited photography exhibition turned into a disaster. Her night was sabotaged by her boyfriend, Evan, who deliberately took Bree’s estranged mother to a bar and got her drunk before the event. The reunion Bree hoped for turned into a chaotic, hurtful spectacle. Actress Cat Missal, who plays Bree, described Evan’s actions as a manipulative power play. “He is entrapping her. He’s just convincing her that he is the only safe space in her life”, Missal told Variety. This isolation tactic worked, especially after a second, more personal betrayal unfolded.

In the midst of the chaos with her mother, Bree turned to Wrigley for comfort, and the two shared their first kiss. They agreed to end things with Evan and Pippa to be together. However, when a distraught Pippa called Wrigley later, feeling alone after her fight with Diana, his people-pleasing nature and guilt won out. He went to comfort her, and they ended up sleeping together, shattering Bree’s fragile moment of happiness.

The Double Betrayal That Changes Everything

The episode’s final blow came from two directions at once. Reeling from Wrigley’s choice, Bree then discovered the old secret that has haunted the group for years. She stumbled upon photos from the freshman year Hawaiian party, putting together that the girl Evan cheated on her with was Lucy. In a single night, Bree was betrayed by her boyfriend, her hopeful new love interest, and one of her best friends. For Cat Missal, this layered betrayal sends Bree into a tailspin she might have otherwise avoided. “I don’t think she would have been in as big of a spiral as she was in” if the Wrigley betrayal hadn’t happened first, Missal noted.

This revelation forces fans to re-examine Bree’s own actions. Missal herself views Bree’s secret affair with Wrigley as a deeper wrong than Lucy’s one-time drunken mistake with Evan. “I think that what Lucy did was for attention, and what Bree is doing is incredibly secretive and way deeper. It just feels worse”, the actor stated, adding, “She’s kind of a villain in my eyes”. This complexity makes the final shot of Bree taking Evan’s phone all the more ominous, as viewers are left to wonder what she plans to do with this devastating knowledge.

A Look Ahead: What Comes After the Explosion

The official synopsis for Season 3, Episode 8, titled “Are You Happy Now, That I’m on My Knees?,” promises that “a scandal erupts at Baird College” and “shocking truths come to light”. The tape Lucy recovered, Bree’s discovery, and the fallout from Wrigley and Pippa’s night together are all poised to collide. Furthermore, the present-day wedding timeline, which was absent in Episode 7, is likely to return. In that timeline, Stephen now knows about Bree and Wrigley’s past connection, setting the stage for more manipulation and chaos as the season races toward its finale.

The newest episodes of Tell Me Lies continue to release weekly. Episode 8, the season finale, is scheduled to stream on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ in international regions.
