The idea of going back to the small town that made television history is now officially over. Dan Levy, the co-creator and star of the beloved sitcom Schitt’s Creek, has shared that any plans for a sequel or revival are permanently finished. The reason is the loss of his close friend and on-screen mother, Catherine O’Hara, who passed away earlier this year. In a recent emotional interview, Levy opened up about why continuing the story of the Rose family without her is just not possible.
Levy had been thinking about a follow-up to the show for some time. But after O’Hara’s death on January 30, 2026, at age 71, those ideas came to a complete stop. The actress died from a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer as the underlying cause. Her passing left a huge gap in the entertainment world and especially in the hearts of the Schitt’s Creek cast and crew.
Dan Levy Gets Emotional Returning to ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Set
The news came during an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning. Levy went back to Goodwood, Ontario, the real-life town that served as the filming location for the fictional Schitt’s Creek. It was his first time visiting the spot since the show ended in 2020. While standing outside the storefront that used to be Rose Apothecary—his character David’s shop—he was asked if a sequel could ever happen.
His answer was very direct and full of emotion.
“No, not now. You can’t.”
Levy admitted that before O’Hara’s death, he was genuinely considering making more episodes. “Yeah, I was thinking about it,” he said. But being back on the set without her made the reality sink in. He struggled to keep his composure, taking off his glasses to wipe away tears.
“It’s tough, it’s tough being back. I didn’t think that I’d have quite an emotional reaction. Just a lot of memories, a lot of memories with Catherine. It’s what you have to hold on to, is the memories of it all.”
Why Moira Rose Made the Show Unrepeatable
For six seasons, Catherine O’Hara played Moira Rose, the eccentric former soap opera star with a wild accent and an even wilder wardrobe. She was the heart of the show’s comedy. Dan Levy explained that her talent was so unique that trying to replace her or write around her absence just wouldn’t work.
He recalled how sharp she was, even joking about her skill with internet culture. Despite O’Hara not being very active online, she knew exactly how to create moments that fans would turn into memes.
“For someone who was not on the internet, she knew how to meme.”
Levy also spoke about the personal connection his family had with O’Hara. His father, Eugene Levy, worked with her for over 50 years. They met at Toronto’s Second City Theater in the 1970s. To the Levy family, she was more than just a co-star; she was family long before she ever played Moira Rose.
The Show’s Legacy and What Fans Are Doing Now
Schitt’s Creek started on CBC in 2015 and ran until 2020. The plot followed the wealthy Rose family—Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (O’Hara), David (Dan Levy), and Alexis (Annie Murphy)—who lost everything and had to move to a rundown town they once bought as a joke. The show became a massive hit worldwide, especially after arriving on Netflix.
In its final season, the show made Emmy Awards history by winning all seven major comedy awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and acting trophies for every main cast member. O’Hara won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020 for her role as Moira.
Fans are still mourning the loss of the actress. In Goodwood, the building that was used as Rose Apothecary now operates as a real store called the Goodwood Mercantile. The owners have placed a condolence book inside for visitors to sign and pay their respects to O’Hara. People leave notes, flowers, and small gifts to remember the star who brought so much joy to their lives.
Moving Forward With ‘Big Mistakes’
While the door to Schitt’s Creek is now closed, Dan Levy is keeping busy with new work. He is getting ready to release a new Netflix comedy series titled Big Mistakes. The show is about a New Jersey pastor and his sister who get mixed up with organized crime.
Even though he is working on new projects, Levy made it clear that Schitt’s Creek will always be special.
“It’s the big crown jewel.”
He shared a tribute on Instagram the day O’Hara died, calling her “the greatest” and “irreplaceable.” He wrote about the joy of getting to work with her and how he will always cherish every funny memory they made together.
