Hulu has officially renewed the hit sports comedy Chad Powers for a second season. The streaming service announced on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, that star and co-creator Glen Powell will return to the role of the fake quarterback, letting fans know the story of the South Georgia Catfish will continue . The news comes just over a month after the first season’s finale left the team’s fate, and Chad’s secret, in a cliffhanger.
The show’s renewal was announced by Hulu and confirmed by major entertainment outlets . An Instagram post from the show’s official account shared the news with fans, with many celebrating in the comments. One fan called it the “best Christmas gift ever” .
Based on a popular ESPN sketch from Eli’s Places, the series follows Russ Holliday (Glen Powell), a former college football star who ruined his career with a championship game fumble . Eight years later, he creates a new identityโcomplete with a fake mustache, wig, and southern accentโas Chad Powers, a walk-on quarterback for the struggling South Georgia Catfish . The series is co-created by Powell and writer Michael Waldron (Loki), with NFL legends Eli and Peyton Manning serving as executive producers .
What The Season 2 Renewal Means For The Catfish
The renewal ends weeks of speculation from fans who were left waiting after the six-episode first season concluded. The show quickly became one of the most-watched series on Hulu and Disney+ after its September 30, 2025 debut, consistently ranking on streaming charts . Its reliable audience performance played a key role in securing the second season.
Creators Powell and Waldron had already expressed strong hope for the show’s future before the official announcement. In multiple interviews, they confirmed they have a detailed plan for where the story should go.
“We have a really strong idea of what weโd want to do in a Season 2 and 3. We have an amazing arc to the whole journey,” Powell told ClutchPoints in November .
Showrunner Michael Waldron shared a similar sentiment with Decider, stating the first season’s cliffhanger was always part of a larger plan. “We always intended to have a cliffhanger,” Waldron said. “And weโre working on it to try and make sure everything that happens next is good and fulfilling” .
Where Season 1 Left Off And What Comes Next
The first season finale, titled “6th Quarter,” ended with major stakes for Chad and the entire team. The episode built up to a crucial game against the Georgia Bulldogs, shot during an actual college football game for authenticity . At the same time, Chad’s carefully constructed lie began to fall apart.
The character Ricky (played by Perry Mattfeld), the daughter of Coach Hudson, discovered Chad’s true identity as the disgraced Russ Holliday . The season ended with Ricky holding this secret, creating immediate tension for the next chapter. Waldron has teased that this discovery will completely change the show’s dynamic for Season 2.
“If weโre lucky enough to get to make a Season 2, whatโs clear is that whether she likes it or not, Ricky has been pulled into this conspiracy,” Waldron explained. “So itโs her, Russ, and Danny pulling off Chad Powers. And thatโs a whole new, really fun dynamic. Itโs gonna be a blast” .
This means Season 2 will likely focus on the trio working together to maintain the charade as the Catfish’s football season continues. The creators have stated they want to tell the story “pretty much in real time,” so the new season should pick up soon after the finale’s events . They also plan to continue filming at real college football games to capture the sport’s authentic atmosphere .
Returning Cast And Production Plans
Alongside Glen Powell, the core cast from Season 1 is expected to return. This includes Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Steve Zahn as Coach Jake Hudson, and Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, Chad’s friend who helps with the disguise . Also returning are Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd and Wynn Everett as Tricia Yeager .
While an exact start date for filming has not been officially announced, a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in November indicated that the Atlanta-based crew was told to prepare for production to begin in January . This aligns with the creators’ stated desire to produce new episodes quickly so fans do not have to wait long between seasons .
In terms of the story, Powell has one specific request for the new season, joking about his real-life loyalties. “Itโs a make-or-break thing for me that the University of Texas be included,” he told Variety. “I told Waldron, โIf I have to support the UGA football program and not the University of Texas one more time, Iโm gonna break.’” . The creators have also mentioned wanting to feature high-profile guest stars, with names like Taylor Swift and members of the Kelce family floated as possibilities .
