TVING’s first historical K-Drama, Queen Woo, starring Jeon Jong Seo as the widowed Queen Woo Hee, has sparked significant controversy following the release of its first four episodes on August 29, 2024. Despite the show’s promise of an intense power struggle and a strong female lead, viewers and critics have been quick to express disappointment, largely due to the show’s explicit content.
Critics, including a review from TENASIA, have harshly criticized the series, labeling it as “all sex and boobs.” The historical drama, which was expected to be a female-centric narrative, has instead been overshadowed by frequent and graphic nudity, leaving many questioning the creative direction of the show. Jeon Jong Seo’s portrayal of Queen Woo, a character navigating a dangerous power struggle following the king’s death, has been praised, but the show’s heavy focus on explicit scenes has detracted from its potential.

Adding to the criticism, Jeong Yu Mi, who also stars in the series, admitted to feeling burdened by her topless scenes, despite believing they were essential to the plot. However, this claim has been met with skepticism, with some questioning whether the nudity was necessary or merely a tool for shock value.
Fans on Reddit have compared Queen Woo to Game of Thrones, noting the similarities in the amount of nudity and explicit scenes, but lamenting that it lacks the narrative depth of the HBO series.
With Part 2 of the drama set to be released on September 12, 2024, viewers are hopeful that the remaining episodes will focus more on the story and less on gratuitous content.
