FX dropped a secret episode of The Bear on May 5, 2026, without any warning. The one-off episode titled “Gary” takes viewers back in time with Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey (Jon Bernthal) on a work trip to Gary, Indiana. But the episode pulls a sharp turn at the end, jumping to present day where a car crash leaves Richie‘s life in question.

The timing is no accident. The Bear Season 5 arrives on June 25, 2026, and it will be the show’s final chapter. This surprise drop serves as a direct lead-in to the last season, giving fans new context about Richie and Mikey’s relationship right before the series ends.

Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal Wrote the Episode Themselves

Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal did not just star in “Gary.” They co-wrote the entire episode with series creator Christopher Storer directing. The two actors are currently performing together in a Broadway production of Dog Day Afternoon, which likely helped them collaborate on the script.

The episode follows Richie and Mikey driving from Chicago to Gary for a mysterious delivery job for Jimmy (Oliver Platt‘s character). They arrive early and pass time eating hot dogs, playing basketball with local teenagers, and ending up at a bar where Richie quickly becomes the center of attention.

The bar scenes show Mikey holding back while Richie drinks heavily. At one point, Mikey explodes and brings up Richie becoming a father, since his wife Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs) is nine months pregnant. The tension between the cousins boils over before a woman named Sherri steps in to calm things down.

The Crash Scene Comes Out of Nowhere

After Mikey and Richie complete the delivery and start driving back, the episode seems to end quietly. Then the screen shifts. Richie sits alone in his car during heavy rain. He wears his Maître D’hôtel uniform from The Bear restaurant. This is present day.

Richie stares at the empty passenger seat beside him. A car honks behind him. He moves forward into an intersection. Another vehicle runs a red light and T-bones his car on the passenger side. Richie yells “stop!” The screen cuts to black.

The episode does not show what happens next. Viewers do not know if Richie survives or how badly he is hurt.

What the Actors Say About That Ending

Jon Bernthal told ABC7 Chicago that the episode should be seen through the lens of memory. “Everything with Mikey is always through the lens of memory, you know. Good or bad. And it‘s a part of the show that I think, you know, like so much of it that’s so beautiful, so nuanced and rich,” he said.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach explained that “Gary” is a memory Richie is thinking back on. He pointed to a moment in Season 3 or 4 where Richie tells Sugar (Abby Elliott) about a trip he took with Mikey to Gary. “And she goes, ‘How was it?’ And he thinks, and he was like, it was a great day,” Moss-Bachrach recalled.

“And I find that that’s so poignant that that‘s how he remembers that day. Or that’s how what he chooses to share with her. And that‘s what I’m sharing with you.” – Ebon Moss-Bachrach on Richie‘s memory of the Gary trip

Season 5 Picks Up Right After a Major Cliffhanger

FX confirmed that Season 5 will be The Bear‘s last. The final eight episodes premiere on June 25, 2026, streaming on Hulu at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and also airing on FX’s cable channel.

The official Season 5 logline reveals the show picks up immediately after Season 4‘s finale. Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) has quit the food industry, leaving the restaurant to Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), Richie, and Sugar. They have no money, face the threat of a sale, and a storm is coming. The team must come together for one last service, hoping to finally earn a Michelin star.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Donna Berzatto, said in March that the chefs were ready to close the kitchen. “It is the end of the show. They’ve said it from the beginning. It‘s the end of the show,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

Fans React to the Shocking Cliffhanger

Social media lit up after “Gary” dropped. Many viewers focused on the burning field shots that appear throughout the episode and what they might mean. Some thought the flames were connected to the crash or represented the anger between Mikey and Richie.

The empty passenger seat also caught attention. Richie always rode in the passenger seat when Mikey drove. In the present day, he sits in the driver’s seat looking at that empty space right before the car hits that exact spot. Fans are debating whether this means Richie survives because he was on the other side of the car.

Viewers will only wait about six weeks for answers. The Bear Season 5 drops on June 25, 2026. Until then, Richie‘s fate remains unknown.
