The Lanterns TV show hasn’t even arrived on screens yet, but people are already asking about a second season. The showrunner behind the upcoming HBO series just gave a very honest answer about where things stand.

Chris Mundy, who runs the show, sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about the Green Lantern series. The conversation quickly turned to whether fans should expect more than one season of the DC show.

The showrunner made it clear that the team is thinking ahead, but nothing is officially locked in yet. HBO has not given a formal green light for Lanterns Season 2 at this time.

Mundy admitted he would be “totally bluffing” if he claimed to know how the entire story ends. The writers want room to grow the series naturally as it moves forward.

The show is being built as a multi-season project. Entertainment Weekly described Lanterns as designed for multiple chapters, should the chance come up to make more. Mundy added, “I’d be totally bluffing if I said I could tell you the last thing of the endgame.”

The network will likely wait to see how the first season performs before making any final choices. Ratings and fan reactions will play a big part in what happens next.

What Makes Lanterns Different From Other Superhero Shows

Lanterns is not your usual save-the-galaxy superhero show. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler takes on the role of Hal Jordan. Instead of nonstop action, the series leans into a gritty murder-mystery style that feels closer to True Detective.

Mundy explained the show’s core focus: “It was less of a whodunnit as much as like, what happened and why? We think of this as a relationship show between John and Hal, and there’s a lot to unpack over the course of the eight episodes.”

The story plays out across two different time periods. One part takes place in 2016 after a shooting in Rushville, Nebraska. Hal starts suspecting something strange is going on, possibly even alien-related. The other timeline jumps ahead to 2026, opening the door to a second mystery that connects with the larger DC Universe.

Other Green Lantern Characters Coming to the Show

Fans of the Green Lantern mythology have reason to be excited. Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner will show up multiple times throughout the season. Mundy jokingly described the fan-favorite Lantern as “fabulously obnoxious,” which fits the character perfectly.

The showrunner also confirmed that several other names tied to Green Lantern lore will appear in Season 1. However, he noted, “There are a bunch of other people from the mythology, from the canon, but not the other Lanterns. We talk about them at different times, but they’re not gonna interact with them in the course of this season.”

This leaves the door open for more Green Lantern characters to join in possible future seasons.
