What Is The Shards About?

The Shards is a teen horror-thriller series created by Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis. The story takes place in Los Angeles in 1981. It follows a 17-year-old version of Bret Easton Ellis during his final year at the elite Buckley prep school.

The main character Bret (played by Igby Rigney) is an aspiring writer. His world changes when a new student named Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) arrives. Robert is described as mysterious and magnetic. His appearance happens at the same time as a serial killer called The Trawler starts targeting teenagers across the city.

Bret becomes worried about Robert and tries to warn his friends. But his friends are not convinced. The series explores identity, sex, jealousy, obsession, and the dangers that hide beneath the surface of American adolescence.

Ryan Murphy shared his thoughts on the show’s themes:

“Shows about first times are exciting—first kiss, first heartbreak, in this case first murder. Everything is so in color, so vivid.”

The Shards Cast

The series features a mix of rising stars and experienced actors.

The main cast includes:

  • Igby Rigney as Bret Easton Ellis
  • Homer Gere as Robert Mallory
  • Graham Campbell as Thom Wright
  • Hayes Warner as Debbie Shaffer
  • Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds
  • Wes Bentley as Terry Schaffer
  • Evan Rachel Wood in a recurring role

Homer Gere, son of actor Richard Gere, takes on his first leading role in this series. He previously appeared in the final season of Euphoria. Igby Rigney is known for his work in Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club.

Ryan Murphy spoke about the casting process, which took six months:

“We read thousands of people for these parts—every young person working in that magic age range auditioned for these parts. It took six months.”

He also shared how Homer Gere got the role:

“I remember specifically when Homer walked into the room. I had him read for Matt, Thom, Bret. As soon as he read Robert, I thought, That’s the guy.”

Where To Watch The Shards

Viewers in the United States can watch The Shards on FX and Hulu. The show will premiere on August 5, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on both platforms.

For international audiences, the series will be available on Disney+. The release date for Disney+ is August 6, 2026.

In the United Kingdom, the series will premiere on August 6 exclusively on Disney+. Indian viewers can watch on JioHotstar starting August 6, 2026. Australian audiences will also get the show on Disney+.

The series comes from 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Television. Ryan Murphy, Bret Easton Ellis, Max Winkler, and several others serve as executive producers.

The Story Behind The Shards

The Shards is based on Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 novel of the same name. The book was first released as a serialized audiobook before hitting shelves in 2023. Ellis is known for writing American Psycho, which was adapted into a film starring Christian Bale in 2000.

The series was initially developed at HBO in 2024 before moving to FX. Ryan Murphy expressed his admiration for Ellis’s work:

“I’ve always loved, borderline worshipped, Bret’s work. We’re pretty much the same age and I grew up with [his books]. He’s interested in the things I’m interested in.”

The novel explores the blending of fact and fiction. Bret’s obsession with Robert is matched by his obsession with The Trawler, a serial killer who seems to be getting closer to Bret and his friends. The killer taunts them with threats and acts of violence. The story questions whether Bret can trust his friends or even his own mind.

The series is set against the bright and glamorous backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles. This setting contrasts with the dark events unfolding in the story.

The official trailer for The Shards was released on July 14, 2026. It gives viewers a first look at the stylish and dark thriller.
