The cast of ABC’s police drama The Rookie went into production on the Season 8 finale without knowing if the show would continue. That uncertainty led the team to film two different endings for the season. One version aired in May. The other remains unseen.
Eric Winter, who plays Sergeant Tim Bradford, shared this information at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25. He told PEOPLE that the production shot an alternate conclusion to the eighth season because the cast and crew did not know if ABC would renew the series for a ninth season. The network did not officially confirm the renewal until April, which was 15 weeks into the show’s Season 8 run.
Alternate Ending Filmed Due to Cancellation Fears
Winter explained that the team prepared for the possibility that Season 8 would be the final chapter of the series. “We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back,” he said at the convention. “We even shot an alternate ending to the show.”
The actor did not share what the alternate ending contained. He told PEOPLE that revealing those details would be a “spoiler” for fans. Winter only said that the unaired version “would’ve been different” from what viewers saw on screen.
The decision to shoot two endings came from the uncertain nature of network television. Even with a dedicated audience, shows can face cancellation at any time. The Rookie has been on ABC since 2018 and has built a strong following over eight seasons. But that did not guarantee a Season 9 pickup.
Season 8 Finale Left Fans With a Major Cliffhanger
The Season 8 finale aired on ABC in May. The episode centered on the transfer of crime boss Heath Everett, played by Jeffrey Vincent Parise. The team managed to put Everett behind bars, but he had one final move.
In the closing moments, Tim Bradford proposed to Lucy Chen, played by Melissa O’Neil, on a beach at sunset. She said yes. The celebration lasted only seconds. Two of Everett’s men tranquilized the couple and kidnapped them.
The episode ended with Tim and Lucy unconscious and in the hands of Everett’s operatives. Showrunner Alexi Hawley told TV Insider that the cliffhanger carried “real stakes” for both characters. He also said the kidnapping was “set up all the way back” at the beginning of the season.
Hawley later teased that Season 9 would reveal the real mastermind behind the abduction. “There’s a right hand person out there that is pulling these strings for sure,” he told Deadline.
Season 9 Premiere Set for January 2027
ABC renewed The Rookie for a ninth season in April. The new season is expected to premiere in January 2027. This continues the show’s pattern of launching new seasons in the midseason schedule.
Hawley revealed at Comic-Con that the Season 9 premiere will be a two-part episode. He described it as high-stakes and dramatic, with elements of romance and unexpected moments. “I think it’s the best of what we do,” he said.
The long wait between seasons has been difficult for viewers. O’Neil acknowledged the frustration during the Comic-Con panel. When asked how fans felt about the finale, she apologized for the emotional impact. “We are so sorry for that,” she said. “But also, thank you for going along for the ride.”
Cast Reacts to Renewal and Cliffhanger
Winter expressed relief and excitement about returning for another season. “I’m very happy that we get to come back for season 9,” he said. He also spoke about the strong bond among the cast members. “Anytime we find out we have another season with this great group of people, it’s an exciting time,” he told PEOPLE.
O’Neil credited the show’s fans for the renewal. “We’re so grateful for the fans of the show. They’ve helped get us to where we are,” she said. “The reason they keep watching—and new people keep joining all the time—is why we’ve made it to season 9.”
During the panel, Nathan Fillion, who plays John Nolan, asked the audience to raise their hands if they had a strong reaction to the finale. The response from the crowd was overwhelming. O’Neil joked that she would send fans magnesium to help them calm down.

The Rookie Season 9 will pick up after the kidnapping cliffhanger. The LAPD will race against time to save Tim and Lucy. Hawley has confirmed that no series regulars will be leaving the show ahead of Season 9.

The Rookie has become the third-longest-running series on ABC, following Grey’s Anatomy and NYPD Blue. The show has spawned one spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, which was canceled after one season. A new spinoff, The Rookie: North, has been ordered for the 2026-2027 season.
