Grogu has come a long way since his debut in the first season of The Mandalorian in 2019. The small, green, Force-sensitive foundling has been hunted, trained, adopted, and has chosen the way of the Mandalorians over the Jedi path. Yet the question of who will truly teach him to master his powers has lingered. A recent move by the Star Wars franchise has now brought him one step closer to the one Jedi who may be perfect for the job: Ezra Bridger.
Why Grogu Left Luke Skywalker
Grogu’s path to the Jedi has never been simple. After being saved from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant during Order 66 by Jedi Master Kelleran Beq, he spent years in hiding. His reunion with the Force came through Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter who became his adoptive father.
In The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu faced a choice between two paths. Luke Skywalker offered him Yoda’s lightsaber and the way of the Jedi. Din Djarin offered him a beskar armor shirt and the Mandalorian way. Grogu chose the armor. He chose his father.
That decision was not a rejection of the Force. It was a rejection of the strict Jedi rules that demanded he suppress his attachments. Ahsoka Tano had already refused to train him for this reason. She saw his deep emotional bond with Din Djarin and worried it mirrored the dangerous attachment that led Anakin Skywalker to ruin. Luke, too, recognized the conflict but ultimately gave Grogu the freedom to choose.
Why Ezra Bridger Is the Perfect Master
Ezra Bridger understands attachment in a way few Jedi do. A survivor of the Star Wars Rebels era, Ezra was trained by Kanan Jarrus, a Jedi who broke the old rules by forming deep personal bonds, including a romantic relationship and a family within his crew. Kanan taught Ezra that emotions were not a weakness to be eliminated, but a part of being human that must be understood and controlled.
This is exactly what Grogu needs. He is not a typical Jedi youngling. He has trauma, fear, and a powerful love for Din Djarin. Ezra has lived through similar struggles. He lost his parents, was separated from his master, and had to navigate the gray areas between light and dark. He knows what it is to be tempted by the dark side and to find his way back.
The franchise has quietly set the stage for their meeting. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, released in May 2026, showed Grogu continuing his Jedi discipline on his own, meditating and refining his Force abilities even without a formal teacher. Meanwhile, Ahsoka Season 2 is bringing Ezra back into the main Star Wars galaxy in a major way. The first look at the new season revealed Eman Esfandi returning as Ezra with a new look, and the story will see him working with Hera Syndulla and the New Republic.
The State of the Franchise
The Mandalorian and Grogu marked Star Wars’ first theatrical release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The film opened to a $102 million domestic take over the Memorial Day weekend. It went on to gross over $344 million worldwide.
Reviews were mixed, with a 62% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences rated it higher at 87%. Jon Favreau, the film’s director and co-writer, has said he has “a lot of plans” for Grogu. “He’s on a path to be both a Jedi and a Mandalorian,” Favreau told GamesRadar. “He’s making certain choices and decisions, and he has a great teacher now”.
That “great teacher” is a hint. While Din Djarin can teach Grogu the way of the Mandalorians, he cannot teach him the ways of the Force. Grogu will need someone who can guide his Jedi training while respecting his bond with his father.
Ahsoka Season 2 Sets the Stage
Ahsoka Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on January 20, 2027. The season will continue the story of Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger as they face the threat of Grand Admiral Thrawn.
The trailer showed Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker and confirmed that Ezra will have a larger role this season. Eman Esfandi, who plays Ezra, has teased a new, post-exile look for the character and confirmed that Ezra will not remain hidden for half the season.
Ezra’s return to the main galaxy puts him in the same timeline and region as Din Djarin and Grogu. The New Republic is active, and Ezra is working with Hera to muster support against Thrawn. A meeting between Ezra and Grogu is now more possible than ever.
What Ezra Offers Grogu
Ezra’s training under Kanan Jarrus was unconventional. Kanan was not a perfect Jedi. He had attachments, he made mistakes, and he learned to trust his emotions without being controlled by them. That is the balance Grogu needs to find.
Grogu has already shown he is strong in the Force. He has used telekinesis, healing, and even Force choke, though he chose not to use it destructively. His time with Luke Skywalker refined his abilities, and the movie confirmed he continues to meditate and train on his own. But self-training has limits. Grogu needs a teacher who can guide him through his fears and help him harness his power without losing himself.
Ezra is that teacher. He has faced the dark side and come back. He has loved people and lost them. He has been alone and found a new family. He knows what it means to be caught between two worlds, just as Grogu is caught between the Jedi and the Mandalorians.

Star Wars has not confirmed that Ezra will become Grogu’s master. But the pieces are in place. The Mandalorian and Grogu showed that Grogu still follows Jedi discipline.
