The upcoming season of the hit true-crime docuseries “Betrayal” is set to uncover one of the most shocking cases of deception in recent memory. “Betrayal: Dirty Secrets,” the fourth installment of the anthology series, tells the story of Karoline Borega, a woman who discovered that her husband, Colorado Springs police officer Joel Kern, had been living a secret double life filled with multiple affairs and misconduct while on duty. The three-part docuseries premieres on August 4, 2026, exclusively on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
The Story Behind the Betrayal
Karoline Borega met Joel Kern and saw him as the man she wanted to marry. She described him as “tall, handsome, magnetic”. Friends and family viewed him as a “family man, a devoted father and a good neighbor”. But beneath this perfect image, Kern was leading a completely different life.
The docuseries traces how Borega’s world fell apart when she received a text message that exposed her husband’s secret. What she uncovered went far beyond a simple affair. Kern had been involved with multiple women, and the number kept growing. In the trailer, Borega says: “He was having an affair with multiple people. From two to eight to 15. He could not stop”.
Allegations of Misconduct on the Job
The documentary presents serious allegations against Kern regarding his conduct as a police officer. Multiple sources claim that Kern would “clock in” to work and then have sex with other people in his squad car. Sources also mention his “severe sex addiction” and specific sexual interests.
The series includes footage from the Colorado Springs Police Department’s internal affairs investigation. Viewers will see the authorities confronting Kern with these accusations. While he initially denied the claims, he later broke down in tears and apologized. However, some sources in the documentary label his remorse as “crocodile tears”.
Family Left in Pieces
The betrayal hit Kern’s family especially hard. His daughter Nicole appears in the docuseries and expresses her shock at learning the truth about her father. She says in the trailer: “I was shocked my dad could do something so stupid. My dad, I do not even know who this person is”.
Karoline Borega shares her emotional devastation in the series. She recalls a moment when Kern told her: “If I were in your shoes, I would run”. She reflects on the years she spent with him, saying: “I spent over half my life with this man. My life is a lie. It is a betrayal that is just another level”.
