The journey of Spider-Man: Brand New Day to the big screen took an unexpected turn when Tom Holland asked to delay production so he could star in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. That decision, which required a difficult conversation with Sony executives, ended up giving the Marvel film a creative advantage.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived in theaters on July 31, 2026, just two weeks after The Odyssey hit cinemas on July 17. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the Disney+ series Wonder Man, took over the project after the production delay. The additional six months of pre-production time allowed the team to refine the script and develop the action sequences more carefully.
The Uncomfortable Conversation That Changed Everything
Tom Holland had to make a difficult phone call to Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman when he realized the filming schedules for The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day were clashing.
“I said to Chris, like, ‘Look, I want to do this movie, but if I’m going to do it, I’m going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation,’” Holland recalled in his GQ interview.
Rothman agreed to the delay. Holland believes Sony’s willingness came down to Nolan’s reputation for efficiency.
“I think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie isn’t going to go five months over, and we aren’t actually going to lose Tom for two years.’ Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation,” Holland said.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton on the Extra Time
Cretton, who came aboard during the production pause, spoke openly about how the delay benefited the film.
“More time in pre-production is always a blessing. We were able to further develop the script and flesh out our action design,” Cretton said in an interview.
The director emphasized that the team aimed to capture as much as possible using practical effects rather than relying solely on computer-generated imagery. One example he pointed out was the prison fight sequence between Spider-Man and ninja warriors of The Hand.
“That was shot almost entirely practically. Usually, third-act action sequences in particular are almost pure CGI, but here it really was the choreography and action design of our brilliant stunt team,” Cretton explained.
The film picks up four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter Parker’s identity erased from everyone’s memory. Cretton described the approach as going “deeper” rather than “bigger”.
“Our hope was to go deeper and to look at a side of Peter Parker that we haven’t yet explored,” Cretton said.
Tom Holland Credits The Odyssey for Saving the Film
Holland has been direct about how The Odyssey experience shaped Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
“The Odyssey almost saved Spider-Man because we wouldn’t have had Destin. He wouldn’t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn’t have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now,” Holland told GQ.
The actor brought lessons from Nolan’s set back to the Marvel production.
“I think coming from the Marvel space, and I think this will upset Marvel a little bit—his level of preparation is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” Holland said of Nolan.
Holland took a firmer approach on the Spider-Man set after his experience with Nolan.
“I was really able to lay down the law and say, ‘We are not going to come to set and figure it out. We need to know why we are making this movie beyond the fact that it’s Spider-Man 4 and they make loads of money and we’re going to just have a big summer. Why are we making this movie?’” he said.
“I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any Spider-Man movie going. So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they’re very grateful that it happened,” Holland added.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to strong numbers. The film earned Rs 60.60 crore net on its opening day in India, breaking the previous Hollywood record held by Avengers: Endgame. It recorded 72.3 percent occupancy across 17,250 shows. By the second day, the film had crossed Rs 100 crore in India.
The film also broke records for first-day ticket pre-sales on Fandango, surpassing the previous record held by The Odyssey. Early audience reactions have been positive, with the film scoring 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from audience reviews. Critics have given the film a 90 percent score on the platform.
The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. The film runs for 145 minutes and carries a PG-13 rating.
