The new season of the Paramount+ spy thriller opens with Joe McNamara facing her most dangerous mission yet, one that places her directly between Russia and Ukraine. The premiere, titled “The Spider and the Fly,” dropped on August 2, 2026, and wastes no time throwing viewers into the action.
The episode begins with Joe being abducted in the opening minutes, then jumps back six months to show how she ended up in that situation. The new mission takes Joe and her team to the Russia-Ukraine border, where they work alongside Delta Force to extract a high-value Russian intelligence asset.
Joe Meets a Ukrainian Double Agent
The mission starts when CIA agent Kyle McManus encounters a Ukrainian woman at a bar in Kyiv. She turns out to be a double agent working inside Russia’s SVR intelligence agency since 2018. The informant, played by Elizaveta Neretin, approaches the CIA with intelligence about Aleksi Yurimov, the head of Russia’s covert military intelligence group called the Special Tasks Department (SSD).
Yurimov is described as “Putin’s hammer,” one of the Russian leader’s most trusted enforcers. He had been moved to the front lines on the Donetsk border, suggesting Russia was planning something major in Ukraine. The Ukrainians could not extract him themselves because they feared Russian retaliation, so they wanted the Americans to do the job.
Joe meets the informant on the Georgetown University campus and receives the details about Yurimov. The team prepares to infiltrate Donetsk, a battleground that looks nothing like the Middle Eastern deserts from previous seasons.
The Donetsk Extraction Mission
The operation begins at 6:00 a.m. in thick fog that blocks visibility for the team and their K9 units. Joe, Cruz, and Cody move forward with trained dogs into the mist to strike the enemy line.
The battlefield sequence is the biggest action set piece the show has attempted. Hundreds of explosive drones attack the front line, dropping bombs from above while ground forces fire back. The team advances toward a farmhouse, using flashbangs and grenades to clear rooms. They finish off the remaining fighters and cut a hidden tracker from Yurimov’s arm to prevent their position from being exposed.
The extraction quickly falls into chaos when an enemy drone strike destroys the building behind them. Joe’s team escapes into a bunker just before a final bomb explodes outside the door. They survive the destruction, but the team loses one of the K9 units in the operation.
The War Follows Joe Home
The mission appears successful, but the danger does not stay in Ukraine. Shortly after returning home, two strangers pretending to be state police show up at Joe’s house in the middle of the night. One of them speaks with a Russian accent.
The confrontation turns violent, with Joe killing both men on her own doorstep while her husband Neal watches in horror. The episode ends with Joe facing the reality that her professional life has breached her personal life. Foreign operatives now know where she lives, meaning her cover is blown and her family is in danger.
The opening scene of the episode, which shows Joe being abducted, confirms that the Russians eventually catch up to her. The season will explore how Joe deals with the consequences of a mission that brought the war to her front door.

Season 3 shifts away from the show’s traditional formula of recruiting a new female operative to go undercover. Instead, the season focuses on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, a move that places the series directly in the middle of current geopolitical tensions.
The season features eight episodes released weekly on Sundays, with the finale scheduled for September 20, 2026. New episodes drop at 3 a.m. ET / 12 a.m. PT on Paramount+.
Zoe Saldaña returns as CIA case officer Joe McNamara, who heads up the Lioness program. Nicole Kidman reprises her role as Kaitlyn Meade, Joe’s senior at the CIA. Morgan Freeman and Michael Kelly also return in supporting roles. The cast includes Laysla De Oliveira, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Genesis Rodriguez, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, and Thad Luckinbill.
The season explores how Joe balances her duty with her home life as unseen forces circle her world. Creator Taylor Sheridan wrote the entire season, which features action sequences involving drone warfare that show the true face of 21st-century combat.
At the New York City premiere on July 29, Saldaña spoke about Sheridan’s writing and how the characters could be played by actors of any gender. The show continues to deliver intense action while examining the personal cost of a life spent in the shadows.
