Glenn Close, the legendary actress with eight Oscar nominations, has always believed in working across TV, film, and theater. She recently spoke about how she never saw TV as lesser than movies, even when Hollywood did.
Close has starred in hit films like Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons and TV shows like Damages. She won three Emmys for her TV roles. In an interview, she said she loves all forms of acting and never limited herself to just movies.
“I tried to mix it up my entire career because I have great respect for television, and theater as well, which is where I started.”
When she began acting, TV and movies were seen as very different. Her agent warned her that doing TV could hurt her movie career. But Close ignored this advice. She took a role in the TV film Something About Amelia, a powerful story about a family dealing with abuse.
“Television and movies back then were totally different cultures. At the time my agent said it will ruin your movie career, because I had only done one movie, The World According to Garp. I was offered a TV film called Something About Amelia. And it was about a family where the father was having incest with the daughter. I read the script and it was brilliant and I said I have to do it.”
Close kept choosing roles she believed in, whether on TV or in films. This made her one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood. She won three Tony Awards for her stage work, proving her talent in all formats.
She also talked about her passion for acting, which remains strong even now. At 78, she still takes on challenging roles.
“I think my passion is exactly the same! I think I am still voraciously curious about exploring different characters. I think I have gotten a much deeper knowledge of what it is to be a craftsperson as an actor.”
Close recently starred in Tehran on Apple TV+ and will appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in 2026. She learned Farsi for her role in Tehran, showing her dedication.
She also praised streaming platforms for bringing global stories to audiences.
“We have this incredible opportunity to connect around the world, it is fantastic. It shows we have a chance now for people to look into other cultures, to hear different languages and to hopefully understand each other better.”
Closeโs career proves that great acting matters more than the medium. She continues to inspire actors who want to work in TV, film, and theater without limits.
