The creative team for the final chapter of Netflix’s epic fantasy series is now public. With the show’s fifth season already filmed and moving through post-production, Netflix has confirmed the list of directors and writers tasked with concluding the saga of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. This final season will wrap up the story based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.
Who Is Directing The Witcher’s Final Season?
The directing team for The Witcher Season 5 is smaller than in previous years, featuring just three directors instead of the usual four or five.
- Jeremy Webb will direct the majority of the season, handling Episodes 1, 2, 7, and 8. Webb joined the series in Season 4, where he directed the final two episodes. His other directing credits include popular series like The Last of Us, The Umbrella Academy, and Shadow & Bone.
- Christopher Clark Cowan will direct Episodes 3 and 4. This marks his debut as a main unit director for the show, after previously serving as the action and second unit director for Season 4. He has also worked on major projects like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Acolyte.
- Alex Garcia Lopez returns to direct Episodes 5 and 6. Lopez is a veteran of the series, having first directed episodes in the very first season. He came back to direct episodes in Season 4 as well.
The Writers Crafting Each Episode
The writing staff for the final season includes a mix of seasoned writers from the show’s history and one notable debut. Each of the eight episodes has a specific writer or writing team attached.
- Episode 1 is written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who previously wrote episode six for both Seasons 3 and 4.
- Episode 2 brings a debut writing credit for Tera Vale Ragan. Ragan is not new to the show, however; she has been a longtime producer for The Witcher since it began.
- Episode 3 is written by Troy Dangerfield, whose past credits include an episode in Season 3 and Season 4, as well as the prequel series Blood Origin.
- Episode 4 is a collaboration between writers Clare Higgins and Rae Benjamin. Both have written multiple episodes for the series in past seasons.
- Episode 5 is written by Matthew DโAmbrosio, another writer with several previous Witcher episodes to his name.
- Episode 6 is written by Tania Lotia, who has written episodes in Seasons 3 and 4.
- Episode 7 is written by Mike Ostrowski, a writer and executive producer who has been with the series since its first season.
- Episode 8, the series finale, will be written by showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Hissrich, who created the series for television, also wrote the very first episode eight years ago. Her writing the final episode brings the story full circle.
โWeโre thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowskiโs books to an epic and satisfying conclusion,โ creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a past statement.
Where Production Stands Now
The Witcher Season 5 is not just in the planning stagesโit is fully complete. The season was filmed back-to-back with Season 4 in the United Kingdom, with filming wrapping earlier in 2025. The show is currently in the post-production phase, which for a fantasy series of this scale involves extensive visual effects work, sound design, and editing.
Season 4 premiered on October 30, 2025. Given the lengthy post-production timeline, the final season is not expected to be released until late 2026 or early 2027.

The Story and Cast for the Final Season
Season 5 will conclude the adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series. Season 4 was largely based on the fifth book, Baptism of Fire. The final season is expected to cover the events of the last two main saga books: The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake.
The main cast will see Liam Hemsworth return as Geralt of Rivia, alongside Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Freya Allan as Ciri. The story picks up from the intense Season 4 finale, which left Ciri in a dangerous situation after being captured by the mercenary Leo Bonhart (Sharlto Copley).
Freya Allan, who plays Ciri, recently shared how challenging Henry Cavill’s departure was for her. She revealed she considered leaving the show when he did.
โSeason 3 was a really difficult season for everyone. I cried because I wanted to finish the show with the guy that played my adoptive father,โ Allan said. โHe’s the Geralt I grew up with.โ
Reports also indicate several new actors have joined the cast for the final season to play key roles from the books. These include characters connected to Ciri’s storyline as a prisoner forced into fighting pits, as well as figures from the land of Toussaint, which Geralt is expected to visit.
The final season will consist of eight episodes, bringing the total episode count for the series to 40.
