Episode 2 of the new K-drama Pro Bono centers on a shocking discovery that changes a legal case about a dog. Kang David, a former judge now working with a pro bono legal team, learns the woman who rescued the dog Byeol lied about finding her without a collar. The truth reveals the dog was a victim of abuse by her previous owners.
This discovery becomes the key to David’s first case with his new team. He must use this information to fight against the dog’s former owner, who is the daughter of a powerful official and wants Byeol back after abandoning her over a year ago.
David’s New Reality and a Strategic Deal
The episode shows Kang David struggling with his new job. Once a respected judge handling major corporate cases, he now works from a basement office. His team handles small, unpaid cases, and their success rate is very low.
David realizes his old acquaintance, Oh Jung-in, hired him for a specific reason. He believes she wants to use the pro bono team’s success to improve her firm’s public image and secure her position as CEO. Understanding this, David makes a bold deal with Jung-in. He promises to drastically improve the team’s performance. In return, he asks her to nominate him as a candidate for the Supreme Court Justice position.
Jung-in agrees to David’s proposal but raises the stakes. She says, “He tells her that he will work in the team for a year and bring the winning rate of the pro bono team to 50% from their current 20%, if she agrees to nominate him for the next justice candidate for the Supreme Court. Jun-in agrees, but only if he brings the winning to 70%.”
With this high-pressure agreement in place, David turns his full attention to his first client: a golden retriever named Byeol.

The Case of Byeol and a Hidden Truth
Byeol’s case seems simple at first. An elderly couple adopted her after she was abandoned. More than a year later, the previous owner suddenly wants the dog back. David’s investigation takes a turn when the opposition presents a witness. This witness claims she saw So-yeon, the woman who rescued Byeol for the elderly couple, remove the dog’s collar and throw it into a river.
So-yeon initially denies this. After David presses her, she breaks down and confesses. She did throw away the collar, but not to hide evidence. She reveals the collar was a high-voltage shock collar used to abuse Byeol.
“The truth was she threw the collar, which was a high-voltage shock collar, to protect Byeol from her previous owners, and gave it to the current owners.”
The shock collar was designed to choke or electrocute Byeol whenever she barked, causing injuries to her neck. For the elderly couple, who lost their granddaughter, Byeol is a cherished family member, not just a pet. This emotional context adds weight to David’s mission to win the case.
A Clever Courtroom Strategy
Armed with the truth about the shock collar, David prepares for a difficult legal battle. His opponent is the skilled but unethical attorney Myeong-hun. David learns the judge assigned to the case is a friend of Myeong-hun’s, which could mean bias against his clients.
To counter this, David uses his connections. He brings a former judge onto the case as an additional attorney. This move forces the original judge to recuse himself, removing a major obstacle.
In court, David presents the story of the shock collar and demands a jury trial to appeal to public sympathy. However, without physical evidence of the discarded collar, the case remains weak. David then uses his final, cunning strategy. He contacts the previous owner’s father, a high-ranking official. David explains that if the jury finds his daughter guilty of animal abuse, it could ruin the father’s reputation and career.
This pressure works. When directly asked in court if Byeol is her dog, the previous owner denies it. This statement legally ends her claim, and Byeol gets to stay with the loving elderly couple. David wins his first pro bono case not just with legal skill, but with smart strategy and manipulation.
Fan Reactions and a Mysterious Ending
The episode’s mix of serious themes and comedy has resonated with viewers. One fan shared their amusement online, noting David’s struggle to adjust to his new life.
“I was laughing so hard during this episode that I had tears streaming down my face. Try as Da-Wit might to appear nonchalant, he’s actually a very chalant attorneyโฆ He was kicking and running away from his own client, it was the trenches for him”
The episode ends with a twist that connects back to David’s fall from grace in Episode 1. It shows Oh Jung-in leaving the courtroom and getting into her car. She greets a man, saying, “Itโs been a long time, Yoo Jae-Beom”. This man is the same con artist who earlier posed as David’s old friend and planted a box of cash in his car, which led to David losing his judgeship.
This moment suggests Jung-in may have been involved in the scheme that destroyed David’s career, raising new questions about her true motives for hiring him.
