The long-awaited “NCIS” reunion series, “NCIS: Tony & Ziva,” will not return for a second season. Paramount+ and CBS Studios announced the cancellation of the police procedural spinoff on Friday, December 19, 2025, just two months after its first season concluded. The decision ends the latest chapter for fan-favorite characters Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, played by original stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo.
The 10-episode series, which premiered on September 4, 2025, reunited the actors for their first on-screen project together in 12 years. In a joint statement, Weatherly and de Pablo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to revisit their iconic roles. “We feel incredibly lucky to have had the chance to play these characters once again and to tell the next chapter of Tony and Ziva’s story,” they said. “But most of all, we want to thank the fans around the world who joined us on this adventure and finally got to see Tony and Ziva find their happily ever after”.
Core Cast and Creative Team
The series centered on Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, who reprised their roles from the flagship “NCIS” series. They also served as executive producers alongside showrunner John McNamara. The main cast included Isla Gie as Tony and Ziva’s daughter, Tali, along with Amita Suman, Maximilian Osinski, Julian Ovenden, and James D’Arcy. The show was produced by CBS Studios for the Paramount+ streaming platform.
About the Canceled Series
“NCIS: Tony & Ziva” was a departure from the traditional “NCIS” format. The story was a serialized thriller rather than a case-of-the-week procedural. It picked up years after the characters left the main series, finding Tony and Ziva living in Paris as civilians, co-parenting their daughter. Tony ran a private global security firm, while Ziva operated a language school.
The plot was set in motion when Tony’s security company was attacked, forcing the former agents to go on the run across Europe to clear their names and protect their family.
The series was the first in the “NCIS” franchise developed exclusively for a streaming service and was filmed on location in Europe.
Critical Reception and Performance
The show received generally positive reviews from critics upon its debut. It earned an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 73 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. Reviewers from major outlets praised the chemistry between the two leads and the show’s focused, character-driven approach.
However, viewership data indicated challenges. According to Luminate data cited in reports, the series opened solidly but experienced a rapid 51% drop-off in audience across its first three episodes. This steep decline in viewership following the premiere is considered a key factor in the streaming service’s decision not to proceed with a second season.
Fan and Cast Reactions to the Cancellation
Following the official announcement, Cote de Pablo shared a separate, personal reflection on Instagram. She posted a photo from 12 years ago, taken after her final scene on the original “NCIS,” showing her and Michael Weatherly walking back to their trailers.
“Twelve years ago, after my final scene on NCIS, Michael and I walked back to our trailers and this photo was taken,” de Pablo wrote. “We had no idea then that Tony and Zivaโs story would one day come full circle. Today, this photo carries a beautiful new meaning. May Tony and Ziva walk into their forever”.
The official “NCISverse” Instagram account also posted a tribute with the hashtag #TIVAFOREVER. The cancellation means that an alternate ending filmed for the Season 1 finale, which was designed to set up a second season, will not be seen by audiences.
The Future of the NCIS Franchise
The end of “Tony & Ziva” does not affect the broader “NCIS” television universe, which remains a robust property for Paramount Global. The flagship series, “NCIS,” is currently in its 23rd season on CBS. Other active spinoffs include “NCIS: Sydney,” which is streaming its third season on Paramount+, and “NCIS: Origins,” a prequel series that is in its second season on CBS.
For now, the complete first and only season of “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” remains available for streaming on Paramount+.
